I downloaded and burned a copy of getoo live cd i686 and am wondering what i do next. I’m taking a computer programing class and this seems really cool. I really want to have vista and gentoo on my computer but don’t know how to install it or what. PLEASE HELP!!!! I don’t know much on dual OS’s or Linux or getting Linux

Not to long ago i purchased an Acer 5610 laptop. it came with windows vista when i got it. i must have downloaded some sort of virus because it crashed on me a while back. ive tried to install windows numerous times ever since. first i tried xp, i used 3 or for different copies just to make sure i wasnt using one that wouldnt work. xp froze midway through installation ever single time, next i used a linux cd and booted into the “live cd”, this worked but im not an IT professional and i could figure every friggen thing out. what should i do now? please help im at the end of my rope with this pc!

I want to try a Linux based OS on my machine as dual boot system w/ Windows Vista. Found lots of info in net, tried Ubuntu Live CD (without install), however cannot decide which OS will be the best for me. I’m not experienced w/ Linux and just want to try open source soft. I researched all of these distributions http://www.linux.com/distributions/ Is out there something else I don’t know about? I have a Toshiba M105-3041, which has 512mb of memory, 80gb hard drive, Intel Centrino, and it is not booting up…I am a computer expert myself, and I have beating my head away trying to figure this out, but I keep thinking that it could be something else. I get a blue screen when booting up Vista Basic, so what I did was I pressed f8 and told the pc to start up and not restart after it fails, the blue screen read, that it was not able to write to the memory because of an I/O error. This is my diagnosis, I think that it is the memory stick, I dont think its the right kind, I mean I ran a live cd of linux and it worked perfectly with no flaws, when I opened the memory bay, it had no memory, so I got some memory from another laptop that had roughly the same speed and that was very similar and used that, but it will not boot up windows xp or vista. What do you think is wrong? I think that its because its the wrong memory.

i got vista capable pc. i want to intall linux os in there apart from vista. i hav adsl connection with us robotics router (model no: 9107) i got some exp with linux. but i want to know complete details of installing linux. can u tell me where i can download linux os and installation giude. i dont hav cd burner i and i dont want live cds. i like to compile linux kernal. if i do that how can i get other applications.
can u u tell me good linux distrubution for me and anwsers for above problems
