Linux for an extreme beginner???

I am interested in learning the basics of linux. Im interested in setting up my own web server and mail server. However I have no idea where to start. Im really confused with all the types of installations. Where do you suggest I start? Live CD I guess is the best way. I have a box with nothing on it at home. But I also have a macbook here at school with me running parallels windows xp so i guess I could download a live cd and run it in the virtual machine windows for practice I wont have to worry about running my mac because it is running virtually right?

If someone could help me out and give me an idea of what route to go and where to find the basics of Linux that would be fantastic.

Thanks so much

Virtual Machine (for Linux)?

I want to learn more about Linux and the different distros before I try to dual boot or anything of the sort. I tried live cds, but you can’t learn much from those, as you can’t save anything and download anything without having to keep resetting an internet connection. I tried running Linux through Windows Virtual PC 2007 and 2004, but neither of them work. I’ve heard of VMware, but which one do you download? I’ve also heard of Virtual Box and am considering trying it.

So which download is the right one?

How do I install Ubuntu on my virtual machine?

I have an Ubuntu 6.10 live Cd and Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. I went through the wizard by creating a new virtual hard disk. Now I have the Virtual PC Console showing my newly created virtual machine, and status saying “Not Running”.
What do I do now? Please forgive me, I’m a Linux newbie ;-)

Installing Linux on an external hard drive…?

How would I go about doing this in general? I would like to be able to do the F8 thing and choose the external hard drive / flash drive to boot into because I don’t want to have to go through the boot loader every time. I just want it to boot straight into Vista unless I press F8 and choose otherwise. It would be really nice if after booting into Vista if I could go to My Computer and choose the Linux file on the hard drive and be able to boot Linux while already on Vista, kind of like a virtual machine I guess.

Now would all that be the same as doing a Live CD of Linux?

I am going to download Ubuntu 8.04 unless you say I should do otherwise…
