Which (USB) Linux Live Distro should I get?

My laptop’s hard drive corrupted and I cannot repair it without paying money that I don’t have at the moment. I’m taking a long trip very soon, and would like to be able to use it (the laptop). I’ve used a few distros in the past, but they were very confusing, and never booted from an USB drive. My CD/DVD drive is broken, so it has to be USB bootable. Would like an intuitive interface, and as much windows-compatibility as possible (i.e. can open .doc, .exe, etc.) Also, if I could just get the distro files themselves (skipping the whole torrent the .iso, burn it, then copy it to the USB), that would be amazing! Torrenting is actually out of the question. Anyway, if there is a distro that fits all (or most) of the above, what is it?

Can you install The Linux Operating system to a USB drive?

I was thinking about trying this. Trying to install a Linux Operating system to a 8 GB USB Memory. Will it work? I want to Boot from a CD rom and then install to the USB Memory. I don’t like running a live CD all the time and I think it will be much faster and will also free up my CD rom. It would also be great because if it worked I could also get upgrades wear as a Live CD is limited to certain things.

is there any way to use Linux from my USB drive (like the ‘Live CD’)?

I don’t want to install Linux on my computer’s hard disk, but i’d like to use it from my pen drive (USB / Flash drive) just like Live Cd’s are used?

Any good enough version / distribution will do.
