new system tird of viruses?

Hello, I am tired of viruses on my computer. I need a new system, I’m thinking of linux or unix but I haven’t found one I completely like. I want one that is totally windows compatible (meaning I want it to run windows apps without windows) like something made with wine. I want it fully customizable, I want to be able to color the task bar, change the theme etc.. I want it to be fast to, no waiting around to start a program or waiting for it to boot if possible. I want it to be easy to use, and easy to play with and stuff. If any one builds their own linux maybe u can give me a link, or just give me a link to one they think is cool. And if live cd is an option thats cool, if not o well,l I’ll be using vmware to try it out anyways.

Thanks, o yea, I have an AMD 64 Athlon, 1 250 gb hard drive, 1 7 gb restore drive, 2 cd burners, 1 with lightscribe and cd burning technology. And thats all I can give u.

UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition)

UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition)

“As an author, editor, and publisher, I never paid much attention to the competition–except in a few cases. This is one of those cases. The UNIX System Administration Handbook is one of the few books we ever measured ourselves against.”

–From the Foreword by Tim O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Media

“This book is fun and functional as a desktop reference. If you use UNIX and Linux systems, you need this book in your short-reach library. It covers a bit of the systems’ history but doesn’t bloviate. It’s just straightfoward information delivered in colorful and memorable fashion.”

–Jason A. Nunnelley

“This is a comprehensive guide to the care and feeding of UNIX and Linux systems. The authors present the facts along with seasoned advice and real-world examples. Their perspective on the variations among systems is valuable for anyone who runs a heterogeneous computing facility.”

–Pat Parseghian

Linux time-shift installing from the Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD !!

Linux installing time-shift 4000x !!!!!! All the Eye Candy included !! Believe me, tis IS legacy hardware !!! It is a 3Ghz Pentium 4 !!

which linux distribution?

well, i am a new guy to the penguin world. i want to start using a linux version because mainly, open source fascinates me..i’m just entering college now..i hav been using windows since my first grade…and a couple fo months ago, i bought a macbook pro 13..and from then on, i felt that unix(or linux) is the way to go..

this is my first shot at linux..and many have suggested that ubuntu is very good for beginners because of its huge community..i did a little research and i found out that even opensuse is also pretty good….

i have a 5 year old pc, which has 1 gig of memory with an integrated graphic memory of about 256 mb, and a pentium 4 2.26 ghz processor..

i wonder if ubuntu 10.4 can run with all the visual effects turned on..and how easy is opensuse…cuz i m willing to experiment…

and honestly i don’t want to run linux on my mac yet ;) ..its just that i want to experiment first on my old pc…

and do all linux versions have support for printers and scanners? cuz i have a hp psc-1410 all in one…and my dad uses this pc only for scanning and all that…he’ll kill me if he’s not able to scan :P ….

need some help guys, this is the first time i m gonna install linux…

and as far as live cd goes, i ve tried it out earlier, and for some reason, it just wouldn’t start…i ve already checked ubuntu when it was in its 6th version, and it worked ok..but then i was very young..

sorry for the long description, but then may be soon, i ll be helping out other guys ;)

any help would be appreciated :D

What is the best way to run linux for academic research while maintaining WinXP on my laptop?

I am still new to linux/unix and I have been working with some fairly obscure academic research programs by SSHing to linux (Redhat and Solaris) servers through my laptop. I have had the administrators of the servers erase all my data once, and I want to have more control over my destiny. I have looked at using Live CDs/USBs, CoLinux, virtualizers, Cygwin, and dual-booting — but I don’t know which would be fast enough to run data/calculation intensive academic programs and also not make me destroy/re-install my current WinXP installation to do it.
