Live CD on former XP – view slideshow?
I have an old Toshiba laptop. Hard drive is fried. Used to run XP Home. now no more. I have been booting from LiveCD of Ubuntu and other forms of linux distributions with no problem. However, I want to run solely a slideshow (like the new picture frames) using a live-CD or a live-usb. How can I go about doing this? Software recommendations? Thanks!
Help with a Toshiba Satellite P35?
Ok, I have been repairing and custom building computers since I was 13 I am now 21, and this
is just the strangest thing I have ever seen. I have a Toshiba Satellite P35-S6053 that I
received from a friend, he claimed that the only problem was that it wouldn’t charge. I fixed
that problem real quick, he had it hooked up to a 12v 60W charger, this beast requires 19v
120w. So now I have the computer powering on, apparently when the computer stopped working
for him he was in the middle of a Windows XP upgrade, the disk was even still in the drive
when I got it. But the upgrade kept failing. I have tons of windows, Linux, and even osx86
disk’s laying around, and this is where I started noticing problems. Ill just put them all in
list form.
1. Wont boot from a CD unless I remove the HDD(Boot priority is set wrong)
2. Wont let me enter bios setup(its like the F2 key doesn’t work, I even tried a external
keyboard)
3. I CAN press F12 to enter boot list(but then it wont let me select anything, its like the
arrow keys then stop working)
4. I removed the HDD, booted windows setup, and reconnected the hdd as soon as it said “press
any key to boot from CD/DVD” I was able to navigate through the windows setup until I was
ready to install and it said “press enter to continue” it wouldn’t let me press enter. BUT if
I press F3 to quit the setup I tells me to wait 30 Seconds OR press enter to restart now, and
at that point I can press enter to abort the install.
5. I placed the HDD into another computer, installed windows on it from there, put the HDD
back into the computer, and when I go to boot windows I get to the screen where it says
“Windows is loading files” and it has the grey loading bar. But it only makes it about 75%
and the computer restarts.
I am at a complete loss, I have never experienced anything like this before, I have tried
re-flashing the bios, and replacing the ram(didn’t think the ram thing would work but I was
worth a shot). At this point I have no clue what to do. The next thing I’m going to try is to
boot from a ubuntu live CD, but even if I can get it to boot it still really wont fix my
problem.
I have a Windows 7 desktop and a macbookPro at my disposal to aid in me fixing this. (well
technically the macbookPro is a Acer aspire 5920 that I have natively running leopard 10.5.8,
but its just as good as the real deal.) And as soon as I can fix the DC jack on my old
gateway notebook I will have that too. I mention this because maybe there is some swapping of
parts I can do, or maybe a network boot. ( note I have never done a network boot in my life,
but if someone could walk me through it maybe it could work.)
Please there has got to be someone out there who could help me with this, This laptop is a
beast and I would love to get it working again.
I have completely replaced the memory and still no luck.
Alright!!! I fixed it. After disassembling the computer i found the CMOS battery and De-soldered it and soldered it back on after about 10 minutes. That completely reset the bios, all of the problems still existed except with the bios reset to factory default i was able to boot a CD. I went to boot a Linux live CD and got a error message reading “CD/DVD boot enabled please release shift key to continue”. After seeing that i connected a usb Keyboard, still no luck. Then it just hit me…I removed the laptops keyboard, and now all if fine. The shift key is not stuck, as a matter of fact the KB looks almost new, but there is a weird bend in the ribbon cable and i believe it was shorting out.
how can i install fedora 10 dvd edition if my dvd is not working,?

Installing Linux Ubuntu?
ok. I’m running Windows XP on a toshiba satellite (not new one, not sure which model. it’s silver and black). I want to run Linux Ubuntu and tried to install it, but it just installed as a dual boot. But i don’t want a dual boot. I couldn’t find an option to partition the drive or whatever in ubuntu. So i uninstalled the dual boot. Now when i reboot with the live cd it doesn’t even show an option to dual boot or boot off of the cd. please help.
I don’t have the original XP cd it came with but i have another cd with windows professional on it and a key. Which also doesn’t show up when i reboot. and everything is backed up already so i’m not worried about losing stuff.
I have a little laptop theory problem this question is only for linux/windows laptop experts?
a few months ago i ask my mom if i can use her laptop to finish my media log homework. She has a toshiba Satellite L45 laptop with windows vista home premium. when went on her laptop i forgot to ask to log me in to her computer (password protected) and i was to late to ask to put it in for my (she went to sleep and i dent wake her her up unless the house on fire , im bleeding, and so on you get the point)
well put kubuntu live cd in and went to try without installing meaning it runs an operating system on the cd (it never touches the hardrive without permission ) i finish my homework my mom woke up she was like weres my laptop! . i told her i have it and she didnt remeber me asking for her laptop and kubuntu was still on running she was trying to take the cd out but cd never comes out unless it fully shut down properly and she was getting mad she hit it and hit (acting like a mad ape wanting a banana )and the disk was making a scrathing noise . she told me to take it so i shut it down and took it she tried to log in to windows boot it sayed one of the registry files is corrupted and she think that kubuntu mess it up but i was trying to tell it never touch the harddrive . and she wasnt buying it so she told my you got 48 hours to fix it and so i did but i had to erase the hard drive and i install windows 7 (my teacher gave me 5 copies
) and it took 5 hours to install it (not lying ) once when it was done it was fast for 2 days and my mom was kinda satistfied with but then it was super slow like it took 30 minutes to get to the login screen and then it keeps showing the blue error screen and keeps automatically restarting it was really annoying . but after 3 days later it showed the same error that showed on vista my gave up on the laptop and she still blames me for it but then i put fedora on it and it was still super slow so i took the harddrive to take a look at it thes a dent on it . and i remeber when mom was hitting the laptop thats was cause
(note windows requires a harddrive speed to run but that dent explained every thing vista was fine but that speed was reduce and it wouldnt runbecause of thAT DENT
my question is what can i do to at least make it to that the requiment speed again because if try to undent i dont if it cause a leek (then it will be gone forever ) and please dont say buty a new harddrive my i dont want to break the news to my mom about buying a new harddrive
please help my with this im out of ideas
