Thinking of buyin g a laptop to use with ubuntu?!?

I’ve been thinking of buying a laptop to start testing out Linux OS and some Java programming, the only problem is the hardware compatibility i read that using a Live-CD before installing is the most effective way, but the point is I’m deciding the laptop in base on it’s compatibility so can’t really try it out, anyway i got my eyes on the DELL Inspiron 1520 & 1525, reading around i found out that dell supports Ubuntu, but at the same time some say that vista drivers are not compatible so kinda confused any help would be appreciated!! THX in advance

I cant move my mouse or type?

Recently, I when I was logged on, my mouse stopped working. Thinking nothing of it (I have a wireless keyboard/mouse), I unplugged the receiver, and tried to re-connect the keyboard/mouse. However, I still couldn’t move the mouse/keyboard. So I tried a corded keyboard/mouse (using PS2) and it still wouldn’t work. I’ve tried rebooting, and it still wont work (I’m using a different computer right now). However, I know that the keyboard/mouse/hardware isn’t defective because I was able to boot onto Ubuntu (Linux) via a live CD, and everything worked just fine (keyboard/mouse). Regardless, I still can’t get into Vista…I get stuck at the log-on screen (I’ve got a password, and safe mode doesn’t work). My only method of input is a media center remote (plugs into USB … but that only ‘types’ numbers (which do, however, appear). I’ve got absolutely no idea what to do.

new system tird of viruses?

Hello, I am tired of viruses on my computer. I need a new system, I’m thinking of linux or unix but I haven’t found one I completely like. I want one that is totally windows compatible (meaning I want it to run windows apps without windows) like something made with wine. I want it fully customizable, I want to be able to color the task bar, change the theme etc.. I want it to be fast to, no waiting around to start a program or waiting for it to boot if possible. I want it to be easy to use, and easy to play with and stuff. If any one builds their own linux maybe u can give me a link, or just give me a link to one they think is cool. And if live cd is an option thats cool, if not o well,l I’ll be using vmware to try it out anyways.

Thanks, o yea, I have an AMD 64 Athlon, 1 250 gb hard drive, 1 7 gb restore drive, 2 cd burners, 1 with lightscribe and cd burning technology. And thats all I can give u.

will ubuntu linux run good on my old laptop?

I have an old HP laptop running windows XP that I want to install linux on. I am thinking of installing Ubuntu on it but it seems to run really slow using the live CD even though my specs meet the minimum requirments (but not the recommended). I want a linux distro that will run at least as fast as my windows XP hopefully faster. I tried Xubuntu but I don’t notice a big difference. My main question is should I install Ubuntu on my old laptop, if not what distro do you recommend?

Here are the specs for my laptop:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
AMD Athlon XP2500 519MHz
448MB RAM
37.2GB HD

Thanks.

Linux Live CD install forever?

I’m thinking of using a Linux Live CD. What happens once I take the CD out of the drive? Will Windows start working right away with no problems besides maybe a re-boot?
