new system tird of viruses?

Hello, I am tired of viruses on my computer. I need a new system, I’m thinking of linux or unix but I haven’t found one I completely like. I want one that is totally windows compatible (meaning I want it to run windows apps without windows) like something made with wine. I want it fully customizable, I want to be able to color the task bar, change the theme etc.. I want it to be fast to, no waiting around to start a program or waiting for it to boot if possible. I want it to be easy to use, and easy to play with and stuff. If any one builds their own linux maybe u can give me a link, or just give me a link to one they think is cool. And if live cd is an option thats cool, if not o well,l I’ll be using vmware to try it out anyways.

Thanks, o yea, I have an AMD 64 Athlon, 1 250 gb hard drive, 1 7 gb restore drive, 2 cd burners, 1 with lightscribe and cd burning technology. And thats all I can give u.

Vista startup problem – Documents folder opens on startup. Help?!?

So when i start my computer it brings up the log-on screen and i type in my password and it hangs saying welcome with that spinning blue circle thing next to it and then brings up the documents folder with nothing else but empty blackness. Somewhere I saw an article saying it was a registry error probably caused by a virus and that an edit of this would fix it (cant remember the path). So i tried it by doing something like finding an entry with the value ‘userinit.exe’ (no quotes, and yes i meant to put that comma there) and I restarted my computer and it came up and said it couldn’t boot, ran diagnostics or something and obviously fixed the error. But my main problem remains. explorer.exe does run, but it is not the desktop, it is the my documents folder. It may be running the wrong explorer.exe. These processes are, however, running whilst i am running task manager – ‘csrss.exe’, ‘dwm.exe’, ‘taskeng.exe’, ‘taskmgr.exe’ (obviously while I’m running task manager), and ‘winlogon.exe’. I am pretty sure that this is a virus because on one of my accounts, it brings up a window asking for admin privileges to run a Windows Update file by an unidentified publisher. of course i hit no and then my AVG Free Antivirus asks if i want to move it to my virus vault. if i hit yes, windows will come up with an error message for this file saying it isnt there, so i put it back. Its in a folder like ‘C:UsersAppDataLocalWindows-UpdateKBxxxxxx.exe’ (where the x’s represent numbers). I have made a new account and it took about 2 minutes to create my desktop, then didnt apply the usual transparent theme, but a windows 9x type theme until i hit File, New Task, and typed explorer.exe. then it loaded the desktop. I run Vista Home Premium and i believe i had the same problem on my old pc running XP home premium, but only on one profile. I know that he easiest alternative is a reinstall, but i would like to avoid this if at all possible. I hope that i havent given to much info. Remember that i will award 10 points to the best answer. Also I am considering switching to using a portable version of Linux, if anyone could point me in the direction of a working guide to install Linux on a cd with a live file system, or a usb hard drive, i MAY award 10 points if i do not get a working reply for my original question.
ty for the help, i knew i should have added that, i have done multiple scans with AVG and Spybot S&D, but thanks so much for your help

Would doing System restore but not removing data files remove a Win32 virus?

Long story short, I have a Win32 virus on WinXP SP2, and disabled task manager, command prompt, and even AVG Antivirus Free Edition. So I’m going to do a system restore, but it has two options. Normal System Restore and the “Destructive Method”. Normal system restore I guess removes all programs and files and returns to factory default, however the Destructive method apparently removes all data files created as well.

So, question: Would a Win32 virus create any data files, and if so, does that mean I should do the destructive method, or will a normal system restore remove it? I’m worried because I’m not sure if there are actually any data files worth keeping, mostly because I’m not sure what a data file is.

Also, bonus question, you don’t have to answer, but: I’m dual booting XP and Ubuntu 9.10 and I have the live cd. So I know system restore will remove the Grub menu and replace the MBR, but I wanna know if it will also delete the linux partition. or will recovery simply recover the windows partition, leave the Ubuntu one intact, and all I’d have to do is insert the Live CD and restore the grub menu to access it?
D: Thanks so much, first answerer, but also, AVG says asyncmac.sys is infected, but it can’t remove the virus because asyncmac is white-listed. Will this be an issue with the antiviruses you recommended?
