Can’t run ubuntu so whats anther good linux disro?/?

Ok i tried to run ubuntu linux and for some reason my system dont want to run it all I get is a bunch of tuff ont he bottom of a black screen. I tried to run pclinuz os live cd and when I hit the start using live cd it acted liek it would oad and then just came back to the screen. I also tried xubuntu and kubutu and the smae thing happeed like it did with ubuntu, So my question is which distro for linux should I try next Can anyone help me fine a linux that will run on this kinda computer. Linux distribution that can be installed on a hard drive?

Can you recommend me a linux distribution that can be installed on a hard drive to use it as a second operating system in the computer?
I’ve tried knoppix bootable live cd and I liked it. Is very good.
Can knopping be installed on a hard drive? Or any other linux distribution?

Xubuntu Linux 7.04 won’t install?

I have an old Gateway Solo laptop. I have been successfully running Xubuntu Linux on it. This week, I have been trying to install the latest version, 7.04, “Feisty Fawn.” It freezes at the “Installing system” stage. It says “15 percent” and “Detecting file systems.” I used my live CD’s tool for checking the integrity of the ISO, and supposedly it is OK. Is there anything I can do to have a successful install?

Change File System without erasing data?

I used to have at bootup the error like reboot and select proper boot device or insert media in boot device. Then I flagged the HD with Gnome (linux partition software live cd) as boot and I had the message NTLDR missing. I booted with the Recovery Console and entered FIXBOOT. It said MBS corrupted. Filesystem FAT!! I had NTFS. Now in gnome it says fat16 and “Unable to read the content of this filesystem”. It can’t tell me how much I used and everything. What can I do to keep my data? I don’t care about windows booting up. I also have knoppix as a live cd to retrieve it but it mounts with weird symbols as filenames and no folders or anything right. PLZ HELP!
