Sound driver problem with Gateway N850X notebook – no sound at all?

Hey there,

I bought the Gateway NX850X notebook around november 2005.
Everything worked fine but now I totally formated my harddrive and no wI don’t have any sound anymore.
My new OS is Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2+), Gateway just had Windows XP Home pre-installed when they delivered it.

The soundcard is not defect, I tried out Knoppix (some linux OS that boots from CD) and I had sound there, but there is no possible way to install sound drivers on Win XP.
It always tries to install the CONEXANT AC-LINK AUDIO drivers. I tried to install any AC97 drivers (Realtek AC97) but it didn’t work. The Conexant driver always comes back up again but I don’t have any sound.

The Gateway online support chatted with me for quite a while and also tried to fix the problem with some remote software but nothing worked. They offered me to send a driver CD but I am living in Germany and they won’t send it over here. Does anybody have an idea which drivers to take?

Thanks you :)
Ben
Nope, in the control panel it says something like “No sound device” (might be different in English, I just translated it from German windows ^^)

Does this sound like a failed Hard Drive?

The computer used to boot up and work, but after a few minutes it would crash and give the blue screen of death. I thought maybe the OS had become corrupted so I deleted the current partition and created a new one so that I could reinstall Windows. However it crashed several times during the OS setup and never finished installing.

I tried using a Linux Live CD (which loads entirely into ram) and it ran fine for hours, it never crashed. I finally tried installing Linux onto the harddrive but it failed as well, now the partition editor in Linux doesn’t even recognize the HD device.

Does this situation sound like a HD failure? A while back I thought it could possibly be the power-supply but now I’m leaning towards the HD. The computer is an EMachine Desktop, bought in 2005.

Linux Sound Question? Crunchbang and Mint?

I have a Dell XPS M1210. I dualboot XP and Linux Mint 6. Also, I have recently run a live CD for crunchbang. In XP and Crunchbang sound works well, and sounds great. In Mint, I get sound, but the sound is crackly. I know it isn’t the hardware, because it sounds great on 2 other OSes. Any Ideas?
