How to remove viruses from an inoperable OS (XP)?

I’ve never run into this problem, but my sister supposedly has a virus on her XP box, and I’m really not sure how to help her. The bootloader works fine, but upon selecting a user, does not display any icons or any sort of interface. Pressing the power button seems to call up the ‘shut down’ display on xp.

What virus, if any, might this be? What are some possible solutions that don’t involve me manually backing up and reinstalling everything? (I can run a live linux cd and mount the HD)
NOTE: there is NO anti-virus installed on this machine.

Is my laptop Linux resistant?

I have a Toshiba A215-S7422 and I’m having trouble with linux. I tried to use BackTrack2 a few months ago. When I tried to boot from the live CD, i was able to log in, but when i used starx (i think thats what it was) i started to try to boot, and then it got stuck in a some sort of loop. Today Idecided to try to play aroung with Ubuntu, and when I select the start/install option, it just sits there. My guess is that it is stuck in a loop again, but since it doesnt show the progress like the BackTrack does, im not sure. The CD drive seems to be making the same noise over and over. For both of them I let them sit there for a long time (20 min) It isnt the CDs because they both worked in my desktop, and a friends Dell laptop. Any ideas?

when i try to boot my computer/binary coding 0s and 1s?

when i try bootiong my other computer it says 0 and 1 sort of like this l 010101010110011100011000011100011
but its not that exact its about 4 lines of binary long i think i lost my bootloader and if im right how do i get it back can i downlaod a cd that has a bootloader on it that i can put on my computer eaven when i try puting my windowsxp cd in it says

boot from atapi cd:
no emulation

press any key to boot from cd . . . .

then the binary comes
l 010101010101010010010101010101010
but if i put any linux live cd in it works i would switch to linux if i could use my wirlees usb internet card on it but i cant
plz help
dont say dumb things like u got the blue screen of death i know alot about computers im actuly a programewr i just dont know binary so dont act like im a idiot and the cd wont boot!!!!!!!!! sdo i cant instal it da its a black screen to not a blue one the blue one is when the cd works and doesnt show binar coding

can i run ubuntu 7.10 with networking with xp from live cd?

i am sort of new in Linux world. i have download Ubuntu 7.10 desktop edition. now i want to boot that from cd. and i want to use internet when i am in Linux os. but i don’t want remove win xp from my pc which i have right now. i also do not want to separate my hard drive. is it possible to do that. or i have to separate my hard drive. and also, is Ubuntu 7.10 has beryl integrated. thnx

Really confused here… (computer question)?

Not to long ago i purchased an Acer 5610 laptop. it came with windows vista when i got it. i must have downloaded some sort of virus because it crashed on me a while back. ive tried to install windows numerous times ever since. first i tried xp, i used 3 or for different copies just to make sure i wasnt using one that wouldnt work. xp froze midway through installation ever single time, next i used a linux cd and booted into the “live cd”, this worked but im not an IT professional and i could figure every friggen thing out. what should i do now? please help im at the end of my rope with this pc!

db young; i dont want to buy vista, i already have a supposedly working copy of xp
to tj; i was using a distro called sabayon, it was the only one i found that had drivers for my wifi card built into the installation cd. i need windows for the compatibility
