What Linux Edition is right for me?

OK, so XP has stopped working and Linux is free and Open-source right?
Well, I was hoping that someone out there might be able to help me choose a linux edition for my machine.
My computer is old, it has 1.9 – 2.0 GHz of processing power, Intel Pentium 4 inside and 512 MB of RAM.
I want to put a version of Linux that will be fast on this type of machine, that has a sleek, cool interface. That’s easy to get use to but has many advanced options if I need them.
I am new to Linux but I have used several of the LIVE Linux CD’s on my computer and some worked fast, others slow. I also think that my lappy (laptop) has 32 MB of Video Memory. Yes, I agree, it’s OLD but it can run XP smoothly if you don’t install too many programs on it.
So, any suggestions?
PS: With the Linux version, you would recommend, is it able to connect smoothly to a Windows 7 computer because I bought a new Windows 7 computer and I would like those computers to exchange information and files with each other so no matter which computer I choose to work on, I can access the files and folders neccessary. Using, I think it was called a cross-over cable.
Please provide the name and website details.
Thanks in advance! :)

Could I really install ubuntu linux on my new built pc with my old hardrive?

Im going to have my old hardrive from my old computer for my new built pc. Then i wanted to install linux with a linux live ubuntu cd. My question is that the hardrive has all my other drivers from my other pc saved on it, right? So then I need to reformat it and delete everything on that harddrive. Is there any way I could do this while Im installing ubuntu. Im trying to be really careful in not screwing up my pc idea. thanks in advance!

Can’t Boot Into Linux?

Well this has happened with most of the Linux distributions that I’ve tried to install and run. What happens is that I install Linux okay, then it tells me to reboot. Fine. Theoretically (and from what I’ve heard), Linux is supposed to boot instead of Vista initially right after you first install Linux. Well, no such luck. I install Linux then when I reboot, I go right into Vista. I don’t even get a ‘What OS Would You Like To Boot Into’ or anything. Why is that? I’ve spent the past couple days trying to get Sabayon, 64 Studio, and recently, Kubuntu to run, but all in vain. I can boot into the Live CD, I can install the OS, but then I just can’t boot into it. The only Linux that ever worked for me was Mint and Ubuntu (which I personally didn’t care for), but I want to try other Linux distributions before I say ‘Mint is for me’, especially Sabayon, because I think Sabayon is better than Mint (in my opinion from what I’ve experienced on the Live CD). Mint doesn’t have a KDE version either (at least none that I’m currently aware of. If someone could point me to a link to a x64-bit KDE Mint, that’s be great. I’ve already tried googling it, so please don’t suggest that) and Kubuntu IS the KDE Ubuntu. The only two things that I can think that are a problem are;
1) Linux is being installed on a separate hard disk (but this shouldn’t be a problem seeing as Mint and Ubuntu worked perfectly) and
2) The Linux drive is being formatted in ext3 (which also should not be a problem I would think)

Can anyone help me? I’m really on my last string with Linux at this point, but I don’t want to give up already, however I’m just about ready to.
I would write a really long line of text, but it would just be mainly jargon. So to make a long story short; when I switch to Linux as the boot drive, I still can’t boot into it and it says something along the lines of ‘insert bootable media and restart’ or something like that.

Also, my main hard drive is on SATA and Linux is on IDE, so I can’t really physically switch them (as far as I know at least)

What linux distro for a G4 Mac? Live CD?

Want flash 10 but not OS X 10.4. I tried one of the Ubuntu but it didn’t work right, any suggestions? Here is the system:
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
Mac OS X 10.3.9

All right Linux (Ubuntu) masters, can you help me start up? I’m having some major problems.?

All right, here’s my situation. I have an Asus Eee PC which does not have a CD drive, so I used an Ubuntu live CD on a different computer, and then installed live onto the flash drive. My computer starts to boot from the flash drive. I can choose my language, and I can choose if I want to try Ubuntu, install it, check for defects, etc. For those 3, I end up with the same error, and the screen looks like this:

… I’m not very good with computers and all of the things when I search for this online involve people talking about putting in code and such… I have no idea where to put such code, lol.
The other computer that I have access to can not boot from a USB drive, so I can’t test that… D:
