Hard Drive PROBLEM!?

OK my laptop hasn’t been working for a few months now for unknown reasons. But the bottom line is: i try to reformat and stuff but it says no hard drive found so it can’t reformat. =/ If you’re wondering what happens when i boot my laptop, when I turn it on, it doesn’t go to the windows screen (where windows XP is loading) it just stays black with a white dashed line blinking int he corner. However, I am able to boot up a linux Live CD (backtrack 2 and knoppix both work) and able to go online and stuff with them. So i dunno is my hard drive broken? or still working in a way? any ideas?

I am reinstalling my Windows XP Pro, but my product key is nowhere to be found, can I get the key via Linux?

I cannot boot into Windows, so I was just going to reformat and reinstall, but I can boot into Knoppix (Linux) from a live CD, so is there any kind of application or method I can use to retreive the product key to reinstall Windows?

Could I really install ubuntu linux on my new built pc with my old hardrive?

Im going to have my old hardrive from my old computer for my new built pc. Then i wanted to install linux with a linux live ubuntu cd. My question is that the hardrive has all my other drivers from my other pc saved on it, right? So then I need to reformat it and delete everything on that harddrive. Is there any way I could do this while Im installing ubuntu. Im trying to be really careful in not screwing up my pc idea. thanks in advance!

How can I reformat a Linux live CD for a mini-DVD?

As I mentioned in a question a while ago, I want to spread around some live disks of a Linux distro. All the big distros’ live CDs require a full sized disk, but I only want to use 8cm ones, so I’ve had an idea.

I want to remaster the hundreds-of-megabytes CD ISO so that I can burn it to an 8cm DVD. Any info is welcome!

Also, if you’d care to opine on the commonality of DVD-ROM drives, feel free.
I didn’t think it’d work just burning a CD ISO to a DVD, it’s a good option if it will.

To answer, I want 8cm disks for two reasons. One is to carry one around in my pocket (how many times have I wished I had one!) and the other is to put them into a threefold leaflet to give to customers.
