Hard Drive PROBLEM!?

OK my laptop hasn’t been working for a few months now for unknown reasons. But the bottom line is: i try to reformat and stuff but it says no hard drive found so it can’t reformat. =/ If you’re wondering what happens when i boot my laptop, when I turn it on, it doesn’t go to the windows screen (where windows XP is loading) it just stays black with a white dashed line blinking int he corner. However, I am able to boot up a linux Live CD (backtrack 2 and knoppix both work) and able to go online and stuff with them. So i dunno is my hard drive broken? or still working in a way? any ideas?

Ok… I have 2 laptops , one is working with XP on it but no Cd-burner… only a dvd-rom for watching movies ( dumb i know.. i hate IBM)

Now my nice laptop

has no hard drive but it can burn cd’s and movies etc etc

So im stuck with using a USB 1gig..

actualy lol i just had an idea…..i think i answered my question lol

erase linux from external HDD?

I recently installed Linux Ubuntu on a external laptop hard drive to keep vista on my internal drive. Ubuntu worked fine but there was one problem, the external hard drive had to be present in order to boot windows using Grub. In order to save myself from a future frustration (external drive being damaged or missing).
But my problem is this: now every time that I connect my external HDD (with Ubuntu installed) it doesn’t even show up on “My computer”. So I want to format it to the way it was (clean)
If not through windows, Can someone tell me how to format it throu the Live CD?

GRUB Problems – Linux HELP!!!?

Hi,
I installed uBuntu last week. All was fine, rebooted fine etc. Until i turned on my pc today. It just stopped at the “loading GRUB Page”. Heres what it said..

GRUB loading..stage1.5

GRUB Loading, Please wait.
Error 15

As i said it’s never, ever done this before, just when i turned on my pc today. The last time i shut down uBuntu i didn’t tell it to shut down, i said to hibernate. Could this have caused it? And i’ve done some research on Google. It says GRUBS looking for a file and can’t find it///// Well i hav’nt messed with any files anywhere on the hard drive with linux on it , nor have i messed with the root of my WinXP Hard Drive.

Specs:
> WINXP Dual Boot With Ubuntu
>512Mb RAM
> (The usual!)

NB: I’m using the Live CD to post this becauase I Cannot boot to WINXP OR LINUX!!!

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!
Hmmmm.. UPDATE!!!: In this LiveCD i’m trying to access the drive with linux on it. It goves back an error.

Problem with Knoppix?

So I’m having to use a Knoppix Live cd to get into all the files on my unbootable computer….
but it won’t boot up all the way
it’s sitting here at the
Welcome to the KNOPPIX live GNU/Linux on CD!
page..
it’s gone through listing the Linux Kernel, through the memory available…
It scanned my USB device….
Enabled the DMA Acceleration for hda and hdc
It’s
Looking for CD in: /dev/hdc
and it’s just sitting there…
It’ll let me type stuff… but it won’t do anything else..
How do I continue???
EDIT: Ok so it just said
Can’t find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry.
Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.
Press rest button to quit.
Additional builtin commands avaliable:
cat
insmod
mount
rmmod
umount
lsmod

wow.. linux’s spelling sucks butt
EDIT2: it also says
knoppix#
and will let me type in one of the previously listed options
