Old Pentium 2 Monitor Black (Video Card Problem)?

I work as a part-time computer technician assistant for allinonecomputer and I had a customer bring her computer to my house, and due to me being limited in parts, I tested her Power Supply on my brother’s motherboard, turns out the power supply was bad because it fried two motherboards.

So I had to replace his HP intel motherboard with his celeron 2.7ghz processor with a pentium 2 266mhz processor. Problem is… the damn thing boots up, but the monitor remains black. It has one agp slot and about five pci slots, and one ISA slot.

I have four 4-16mb video cards I tried using in every single slot, repeatedly booting it up and shutting it down and switching. But every slot and card I try… nothing works.

I tried booting a linux live CD, but for some reason (that I can’t see) it’s not booting at all. I also tried a windows CD, but I couldn’t see what was going on.

Any suggestions?

(I’ve gotten most of my computer experience from modifying programs and frankensteining computers in my basement, so I have a lot of non-professional computer background. )

Which Linux OS should I use?

I have an old computer with Pentium II 400MHz, 254MB RAM (two 128 MB DDR1 133MHz memory sticks). The max hard drive I can use is 20GB. I have been using Win95 for the longest time and only switched to Vista about a year ago. I have some experience with java programing and doing most windows tasks but I’ll admit that I never worked with DOS or command prompts before (except perhaps when formating but that’s not complicated)

I was interested in switching to Linux but I’m overwhelmed with options.

I need an OS capable of running Firefox (or a browser capable of loading java applets), Open Office (I am not interested in word editors only but I need to make presentations as well so just using Abiword is not enough) and if need be some mp3s (not so much but it would be nice).

I’ve tried PuppyLinux which is light but I wanted something more powerful yet not to demanding on resources.

Last point is that I would like to be able to run the OS as a live CD before installing it.
Thanks.

On an empty Laptop: Why does my Ubuntu Live CD stop at the loading screen?

So I just got a new Pentium M Dual Core laptop (it’s a 32-bit system, but I forgot the clock speed) with 1GB of RAM and 80 GB of harddisk space.

I tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 and 7.04 using the Live CD method (which was succesful when I install it on my Pentium D desktop).

But with both versions, after the boot menu and selecting “Install from Live CD”, the progress bar just stop at the middle in the boot screen.

Strange thing is, when I tried the so-called Linux Rescue Disc that came with the laptop, the Live CD goes fine without a glitch.

But I don’t want to install that crappy Linux, I want my UBUNTU!

Can anybody help me to get the Live CD works?
Is there any other way to install Ubuntu 7.04/7.10 besides using the Live CD mode?

Thanks/
