i have an old gateway performace desktop pc withh penti.3 (733) and 512 ramm. i tried opensuse but for some reason wouldnt install nor would it boot from a live cd, it was almost there but after i had the curser showing the screen was black with no curser. any ideas?
A good Linux distribution for old pc (openSUSE or Ubuntu/Xubuntu)?
There is a sound driver problem on XP. The sound works on the live cd of Ubuntu.
Pentium III 700mhz single core
256mb ram
Ralink wireless-N (need the compatibility)
I know it’s weak.
XP is a bit slow (I can still play Half-Life at lowest resolution) and no sound.
Must run flash player.
Fast interface. (disabling the bells and whistles)
mostly for internet browsing.
Don’t suggest Puppy or DSL because they don’t support wifi, other hardware, or flash well.
openSUSE or Ubuntu (Xubuntu)?
Linux distro question? Which should I use?
Alright I think I am finally settled on the idea of converting to Linux. Or at least using a live cd to dual boot for awhile to see how my hardware will work with Linux. Which distro should I choose? I was thinking about Ubuntu with Wine so I can try to run Cubase for audio recording. However the distro quiz also recommended Mint,Mandriva, Xubuntu and OpenSuSe. What do you think?
looks pretty good..do you think my Lexicon Alpha will work with Ardour? Surely the drivers are compatible with Linux…
OpenSuSe 11.1 install from Live-CD ?
Can I install Linux OpenSuSe 11.1 from the Live CD or i must download the “DVD version” ?
Linux Mint 6.0 vs Linux openSUSE 11.1?
I’m a linux newbie and i can’t decide which of these distributions is best for me. I’m considering mint since it has flash video enabled on it by default but i’m also considering SUSE since i hear it’s easier to use and has more drivers readily available for usb devices.
consider:
I ran suse for a day with the live cd (the KDE) and i REALLY liked it. i just had trouble installing anything on it—the flash video plugin (like i said, i’m a newbie) so i went to mint (gnome) and though it doesn’t have much eye-candy, it has the flash plug ins and it has very convenient GUI tools for installing programs (such as the package manager and the software manager). however i ran into issues when trying to install some of my usb devices since i really don’t know my way around the linux terminal. which distribution do you guys recommend/prefer?
