Could I really install ubuntu linux on my new built pc with my old hardrive?

Im going to have my old hardrive from my old computer for my new built pc. Then i wanted to install linux with a linux live ubuntu cd. My question is that the hardrive has all my other drivers from my other pc saved on it, right? So then I need to reformat it and delete everything on that harddrive. Is there any way I could do this while Im installing ubuntu. Im trying to be really careful in not screwing up my pc idea. thanks in advance!

My old computer won’t boot from a dvd drive?

I just installed a dvd drive from 2005 into my 2002 computer. The old drive was dead and I am trying to install linux. Problem is when I try to boot from the live cd the computer skips straight to xp and I have checked and made sure boot from cd is the first option. I think because it is an older computer the bios can’t boot from the dvd drive. The bios says something about booting from atapi cd drive. Also I don’t think there is a bios update available. Any help is appreciated. (the computer is an emachines t1090)
But there is no bios update here: http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T1090

And I forgot to mention that the dvd drive reads and works perfectly from within xp, it just won’t boot into a live linux cd.

Should I install xubuntu, or stick with windows xp pro on my system?

I just got an old laptop from a family member a couple days ago (256mb of ram, 600 mhz celeron processor, and 8mb video ram) that has windows xp pro on it. It runs surprisingly well, however I want to try linux (preferably xubuntu, because it will be my first linux computer and I need it to run well on my old computer). Most of the applications I use are ported from linux anyways (open office, gimp, inkscape, firefox), so I don’t have a problem there. The most important thing to me would be a speedy operating system that doesn’t hang often. Do you think it would be a good idea to switch to xubuntu?

Also, it turns out that the copy of xp pro on this system is not genuine, as I ran the tool from microsoft (the people I got the laptop from don’t remember how they got xp since the computer is so old, but it seems to have come with ME and was upgraded. However, the only thing that that seems to mean is that I can’t get updates, but the rest of the operating system works fine. I think that means that if uninstall xp, I won’t be able to get it back.

PS: I tried the live cd, and xubuntu looked good but I can’t really make my decision based on that as it suffers a performance decrease because it is running off a cd. Thanks and sorry for the long question.
My hard drive is only 10gb (only 4gb left with windows installed) so I can’t really try wubi or dual boot.

How do I put linux on my old computer.?

I’m trying to get some use out of my old computer by putting xubuntu on it. The computer came with XP on it but it has 224 mb of ram.

Should I format the HDD and then put a live cd?
