For Linux users: What open source OS would you recommend?

I want to try a Linux based OS on my machine as dual boot system w/ Windows Vista. Found lots of info in net, tried Ubuntu Live CD (without install), however cannot decide which OS will be the best for me. I’m not experienced w/ Linux and just want to try open source soft. I researched all of these distributions http://www.linux.com/distributions/ Is out there something else I don’t know about? Also the question is which distribution will work the best on my machine which is HP Pavillion dv9420us, see http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=computers&category=notebooks/dv9000z_series&subcat1=rts&catLevel=3&product_code=GA354UA%23ABA&tab=detailed_specs#defaultAnchor Thanks!
Can I try other OS without installing them (like Ubuntu)?

dsl on linux?

i run the kenopix live cd, and i would like to connect to the internet, using my DSL Speedtouch (Ethernet) Modem. i really want to surf the net on Linux but it doesn’t connect me to the internet, can someone tell me how to get connected using dsl.
ya but how do i enter the information on it?

Ok I have a Linux Freespire CD and I need some help…?

I have this cd and i want to run the live version of it and it just won’t work it first of all says that I don’t have the correct software–pick from a list or go on the net to find out what software is needed so i pressed net and it wouldn’t open. Then also the live thing is a zipped file I don’t know what I’m supposed to do I open it with winzip and it brings up a window to extract it but it’s not like the normal windows I tried to extract it on my flashdrive which is 512 and it says insert disk 2 so i stopped it so I don’t know what to do does anyone have any suggestions?

How to get Linux Ubuntu Dapper Drake to connect to the net!?!?

I am a newbie, I have installed Linux Ubuntu from live cd. I use a Landline based DSL server that requires a cd to set up. I have a router and set up my computers.

What is the best way for me to back up my pc.?

Hi , I recently did that horrible thing everyone tends to do, I was using the net, I got a virus, and my computer was broken… No backups. I booted to a linux live cd and managed to backup all my necessary files. But the os was another matter.
I tried the acer recovery on windows (which is an acer aspire one net-book) Basically it tries to overwrite c with another partition, stored on the drive. But it refused. I got a bit worried here, thinking the virus got at the partition, or maybe it got corrupt from movement or something. Anyway long story short I found that there was a start up option to a restore program that did not require windows and I got my system back to manufactures settings.
To ease my mind of this happening again I contacted acer, to inquire about some cd’s to back up from in case of future corruptions to the hard drive.
Well I got a reply stating they can re-image the drive for free while under warranty, or to my shock they can send me the cd’s for around £50.
Now I’m not being cheap but £50 is just a disgrace, if AOL can send me 30 cd’s trying to get me onto their service, for free with no postage, then why is a company I already funded charging £50 (and since the only re-image during warranty, it seems like an extra, hidden charge.)
Well obviously I declined the offer, but that leaves the problem of how to backup the partition, any ideas?
Thank you all in advance
