Linux will not shut down properly (Kubuntu, and Mandriva)?

I recently started to explore the world of linux by trying live Cds of both Kubuntu and Mandriva. All three times i have done this, My computer fails to shut down. I have to hard shut down.

Since hard shutting down a computer supposedly bad for it i am afraid to use linux any more.

It gets to the kill processes and then several fail and it just sits their. Then i have to do a hard shut down.

So A. I am not very tech smart so is their an easy way to fix this?

or B. Should i not worry about hard shutting down. (its a live disk so he hard drive shouldn’t be moving, right?)

Either way, an easy fix would be a god send

Other than Ubuntu’s ShipIt! Program How do you get Linux Live CDs/DVDs/USBs?

Yeah I was trying to get the Mandriva One software but I almost downloaded it to my hard drive. I’m very confused about how this all works. Do you download it to a CD? Do you have to actually go out and buy a CD? Can you get a CD for free? I know I know there are a lot of questions here but I’m really new to this and need help!

Which linux, Ubuntu or Mandriva…i am a complete novice?

i have been looking at loading Linux on my 3 pc’s at home, basically for security purposes, i know there is little risk of a virus and hacker etc, i find microsoft bloatware slows down too easily as with any antivirus slows down a pc, so i have downloaded a few live cd and have narrowed it to ubuntu or Mandriva, i want the easiest to use and find all my drivers for, i am initially going to do it on my laptop and then follow suit with the desktops when i am up to speed with it, which is better, Ubuntu or Mandriver, remember i am a complete novice with linux

Whats the easiest version of Linux to learn from?

For someone beginning Linux from 15+ years of windows, what would be the best version of Linux to learn? Ubuntu/ Fedora/ Mandriva aren’t options due to driver conflicts with my installed Graphics card.
Though the live cds run from windows and look great, i cant get to the graphics end on boot up. the screen glows bluish black and theres nothing…

Any recommendations?
