Upgrading to Linux from Windows XP Pro.?

I used to look at Linux as a complete joke, but recently I have seen allot of people who used to use Windows XP and they now use Linux saying that it’s “superior”. I was wondering if I should upgrade to Linux or if I even can. I am currently running Windows XP Professional Edition. I am very unfamiliar with Linux and if someone could also explain how Linux operates (if it is more similar to Windows or Macintosh) and if I do upgrade then what version I should get. Once again I don’t even know if there are “versions” I am VERY foreign to Linux but am very interested and willing to learn about it.

i mean, which linux distribution can actually do these things: 1. see each other on the network, and can access a windows partition in the harddisk?

Some Questions About switching from windows to Linux?

ok im not entirely tired of windows i like it well.i run xp home with plenty of recovery cd’s if something goes wrong with linuz i have plenty recovery cd’s.now..i have absolutely no experience with linux.all i know is that its a free OS alternative.so how do i go by installing it?will i need to reformat my computer to get rid of winsowx xp? will it be compatible with my computer?

Gateway GT5244E
Intel Celeron D 3.20 GHZ (slow processor but runs decently)
2 GB(MAX) DDR2 533 Mhz
ATI RADEON Xpress 200 Series.
Cd Dvd Combo Drive
100GB Hard Drive 7200 Rpm

can i still go through with it?i really want linux to see how it is and to have a better computer overall.any help is appreciated.
