I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with OEM license Microsoft software. For some strange reason, as soon as I log in, I am automatically logged out again. Having researched it on the web, it seems that the userinit.exe file got corrupted and I followed the various suggestions try and resolve it without success:
1. Tried to boot off a ‘Live’ Linux CD;
2. Tried to boot off a full version XP CD, chose ‘repair’ on the recovery console, copied the userinit.exe file over to the System32 folder and restarted, also failed;
3. The Toshiba recovery CD only does a clean install from scratch.
The question is what would happen if I chose option 1 on the XP recovery console “to set up Windows XP now” – would it be a clean install and I’d I loose all my documents and mp3s or would only the OS files be updated and my docs would still be there afterwards?
Thanks
