Thinking of buyin g a laptop to use with ubuntu?!?

I’ve been thinking of buying a laptop to start testing out Linux OS and some Java programming, the only problem is the hardware compatibility i read that using a Live-CD before installing is the most effective way, but the point is I’m deciding the laptop in base on it’s compatibility so can’t really try it out, anyway i got my eyes on the DELL Inspiron 1520 & 1525, reading around i found out that dell supports Ubuntu, but at the same time some say that vista drivers are not compatible so kinda confused any help would be appreciated!! THX in advance

How small is linux…?

What distro of linux can I install to a laptop with 64mb ram, without using a live CD? Also, what live distros can I use with only 64mb? Thanks

What and how do I install Linux on my old Gateway solo 2500 laptop?

I have an old laptop, it has no cds with it besides a “boot directory” floppy disk. When I turn on the laptop to boot from whatever is on that floppy, it say “loading windows 95″ then it says “no operating system found”. So I’m guessing I better try a different OS on the old lappy. So, I want to install linux, not just a live run version, full install, but 1.) What version of Linux would install onto the computer and 2.) How would I partition my hard drive if I can’t get into windows? All I’m at when i turn on the computer is the bios settings. BTW, only reason I’m doing this is to win a bet with a friend. I wouldn’t trade my Dell XPS for anything.

How to repair the Partition Table of my Laptop?

I have a HP DV9500 Laptop. I have 2 HDDs on it, but I can only boot from one.
I have Windows Vista on it. The initial partition table was something like that:
~140 GB – WIndows Vista
~8 GB – Recovery Partition

I split the 140 GB partition in 2 with the Kubuntu 7.10 partitioner. There was enough free space on that partition. I then proceeded with the instalation of Kubuntu. When Grub was installed it didn’t detect Vista. The problem is that Kubuntu doesn’t start-up and when I manually boot Vista it stucks at boot. It doesn’t boot from the Recovery DVD either…
Somebody suggested that the Partition Table is broken. I don’t have a physical bad on my HDDs, so the question is: How do I repair the partition table?
P.S.: I have access to my HDDs via Back|Track Linux Live CD. I can also access the terminal. Can I repair the PT with fdisk?(and how)

Thanks in advance.

How do I fix the MBR on my computer from within windows?

I recently uninstalled a version of linux from my laptop by deleting it’s partition from my hard drive. Now I need to restore the MBR because rebooting my laptop now will result in not being able to load any OS (I’ve done this before). What software can I use to fix the Master boot record (MBR) from within Windows Vista? I really don’t want to use a Live CD but I will as a completely last resort. Thank you.

P.S.: I can’t turn off my laptop until I do so please help!!!
I meant from WITHIN Windows. How come I can fix the mbr from a linux live cd (well not really fix, but change) but I can’t do it from within Windows?
Also I don’t have the install CDs for Vista. I got it new so it only comes with the system recovery discs. Please help!
