What should I use to replace KNOPPIX 5.1.1 as my Linux-based bootable repair CD?

I repair Windows machines often with KNOPPIX; it’s the easiest way for me to get a clean OS running so I can blow away viruses. However, KNOPPIX 5.1.1 shows its age, as it failed to work on a computer I recently went to service due to the computer being “too new.” KNOPPIX 5.2 is a DVD-only release and so is not particularly useful to me. I’m also looking for a USB-based self-contained Linux. The problem is that the number of choices are staggering: SLAX, DSL, MEPIS…it’s hard to pick one. I’d be primarily using it for command-prompt-based repairs on Windows machines, but I’d need X11 and a browser like Firefox available as well. Having ntfsprogs and ntfs-3g are crucial, and having the “dd_rescue” command would be a very good thing as well. Failing all this, having a guide to rolling my own would be a nice thing to have. I’ll be booting this on anything from a Pentium II to a brand new Core 2 Duo, so a RECENT kernel and drivers is fairly vital.

So, what “live” distros should I check out in my search? And please don’t say “Ubuntu.” It’s the worst Linux distro I’ve ever seen in my life, and horribly slow on top of all that.

Linux questions, please help!?

My computer right now is in pretty bad shape. I had XP on it, but it somehow downgraded itself to Windows 98, and there are a lot of problems with the programs and some .DLL and kernel files. I had this before when I upgraded to Windows XP, they went away, and now they are back.
I was wondering about downloading Linux as a main OS, but I’ve read so many things about Linux that I don’t know if my computer would be able to handle the download/new OS. Do you think my computer by the sounds of it could handle it? Since it had the same problems when I upgraded to XP? What are the system requirements?
Also, would Linux work with like AIM, and my Verizon Internet? Also in order to do a live CD, I have Nero. Would I be able to do a live CD off of Nero and a blank regular CD?
Any information like this would be really appreciated.
Thanks for anyone who takes their time and answers me!

Help installing Gentoo Linux?

I have tried both the livecd version and the usb minimal install and neither one will work. On the live cd it stops at a screen that says “boot:” I enter in “gentoo” and it goes through this short boot process then says “ready” then just goes to black screen. When I load with kernel “gentoo-nofb” it loads than screams to a halt at “init 14″ stack something and wont go further. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok I managed to get the cd to load, I had to use this command string “gentoo acpi=off doapm nosata” and it loaded. Now after I install it comes up like it is loading then just freezes after it says ready, and at the bottom it says something like “init 14″ and a bunch of numbers then , stack and a bunch of numbers
