Installing Xubuntu on a laptop with low memory (64mb)?

My computer doesnt have enough memory to run the live CD, is there anyway to just install it to the hard drive without previewing the linux via the live cd… i cannot download the alternate cd, it took way too long just to download the desktop cd…. could i perhaps use a usb pen drive to boost the system’s memory or something?

Xubuntu Linux 7.04 won’t install?

I have an old Gateway Solo laptop. I have been successfully running Xubuntu Linux on it. This week, I have been trying to install the latest version, 7.04, “Feisty Fawn.” It freezes at the “Installing system” stage. It says “15 percent” and “Detecting file systems.” I used my live CD’s tool for checking the integrity of the ISO, and supposedly it is OK. Is there anything I can do to have a successful install?

Installing & running Linux?

I have learned how to install Linux on a windows (win) PC. I run 50% of the time on Linux & the other 50% on win (because my school requires software that was designed to run on windows). I know about the wine application, but win applications run better on a win OS.

Those wanting to try Linux, go to Linux http://distrowatch.com , download & burn an iso file to a CD as an iso image ( http://download.com has download managers and CD burning software for free).

The versions I like are MEPIS , Damn-Small , or Puppy, because those Linux CDs will boot up and you can try a version before installing it. I have heard some people just run off these ‘live’ CD versions.

To install Linux so you have a dual ‘boot’ PC (has both win & Linux), the hard drive needs to be partioned into 3 parts: windows, .5Gb Linux swap, 5Gb Linux.

I have been working just fine on at dual boot PC for years now.

So, my question is: I would like to know how others do it?

Installing an OS on an external hard drive?

I have multiple questions actually.

1) Is it possible to install linux (particularly ubuntu) on an external hard drive and boot from it.

2) Any recommended external hard drives to install linux on? I would prefer one with at least 500 GB but also portable.I was thinking this one:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate+-+FreeAgent+Go+640GB+External+USB+2.0+Portable+Hard+Drive+-+Tuxedo+Black/9420325.p?id=1218102198952&skuId=9420325&st=external%20harddrive&cp=1&lp=12

3) How would I install ubuntu on an external hard drive? My guess is insert the live cd (in my case a flashdrive) and choose to install on the external hard drive? But I haven’t installed ubuntu in a while so I don’t remember if it’s possible to select hard drives when installing.
