How do I set up a wireless connection with Linux Mint 7?

I am completely new to Linux and recently created a Live-CD for Mint 7. I am having trouble getting it to even recognize my wireless signal. I know the computer itself can pick up on the signal as Windows still picks it up. I’ve tried going through and putting the info in as a ‘hidden’ wireless signal, but it still won’t let me connect. I spent several hours last night googling to see if I could find the answer that way, but I every site I tried did not offer the results I was looking for. Below are screenshots I’ve taken of exactly what I’m seeing to help anyone willing to help me know exactly what my problem is.

Info:
1. Currently running Windows XP Home Edition.
2. 512 PC 3200DDR SDRAM memory
3. 3300+ AMD Athlon 64 processor
4. 160GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA hard drive.
5. LightScribe DVD+Writer/CD-Writer
I have tried opensuse linux, but it froze instantly.
I would like to duel boot, if possible.
Also i would like to be able to use a live DVD first.
This is a shared family computer and nothing can go wrong with it!

For Linux users: What open source OS would you recommend?

I want to try a Linux based OS on my machine as dual boot system w/ Windows Vista. Found lots of info in net, tried Ubuntu Live CD (without install), however cannot decide which OS will be the best for me. I’m not experienced w/ Linux and just want to try open source soft. I researched all of these distributions http://www.linux.com/distributions/ Is out there something else I don’t know about? Internet help?

Im having a problem with one of my computers getting online. It has a 169.254.x.x IP address. I tried the basic resets for a 169.254 but none work. It is also the same IP when there is no ethernet plugged in and it has no info for subnet. It isn’t a wireless IP because the computer has no wireless card. It is also not an OS issue because I get a looping 127.0.0.1 when booting to a Linux live CD. Can someone help me getting back online?
There is no router.
