re-install xp problems?

Ok, I have an hp pavillion dv1000 and I was running Ubuntu (for a C programming class I was taking). Afterwards I wanted to switch back to Windows XP Pro. I used DBAN to wipe the drive clean. Afterwards I booted from the cd drive with the xp disc. Everything loaded and then when it said to press enter to continue with the installation, I got an error saying “setup did not find any hard disk installed”. I don’t understand this, when I run a Linux live cd I can view and access the hard drive, but the XP disc can’t find it. I’m planning on updating to Vista in the next few days anyways but I wanted to know what’s going on….and btw does anybody know if the same problem exists with Vista?

How much room for a partition with kUbuntu Linux 9.1?

I have an old HP Pavilion dv5000 with Windows XP Media Center ed, with an 80Gb Hard Drive. I would like to install kUbuntu on it. My questions:
-How much room would the Linux partition require, considering that I might add a few additional programs to standard kUbuntu?
-Does anyone know how kUbuntu handles the blue “fn” function keys from the Pavilion?
-Does S-Video out work properly with kUbuntu? I tried with the Live CD version and there was no way to put it to work.

Thanks all.

hard drive problem or sumthing else?

my mothers computer wont boot it will get as far as the log in screen if you wait 10 mins. the hard drive labors and the read write arm clicks back and forth. i know this is a sign of a bad hard drive however i had another drive do this in my hp and it was just a messed up bootloader. im asking becouse i decided to just go ahead run hdat2 to fix possible bad sectors and then reformat. it will run the bootable cd but after scanning the hardware when i should have disk options on the screen i get nuthing. i dont get no drive found or anyof than just a blank screen with a curser. im thinking i have a busted hard drive. i just find it odd that i cant even get drive options to run off the bootable cd. could a bad hard drive prevent this from running? i did try a linux live cd on the machine and it ran fine. im pretty sure its the hard drive i just wanna be sure before i go spend money i dont have. if not the hard drive what else could i check? or dose this sound like classic hard drive failure??

How to remove the GRUB loader from my computer?

I have an HP dv7 laptop that came with vista ultimate 64-bit preinstalled, which I want to keep. I recently used an Ubuntu LIVE disk to make a partition for Ubuntu, because I needed linux to run a certain program. I got it all installed perfectly, but then I realized that my wireless card on my laptop wasn’t compatible with Ubuntu, so I removed the Ubuntu partition. Now I have only a 295 GB (formerly 285 GB, because I deleted the pretty much useless recovery partition) vista partition, which is what I want. However, when I turn on my laptop, it goes into the GRUB boot loader and says there’s an error, so it is unable to boot vista. I read some articles about how to fix it with a vista recovery CD, but unfortunately, I don’t have one.

I was wondering if anybody knows a way to either completely remove GRUB through windows, bios, etc. or how to set it to automatically boot into vista….maybe a code i can type into the GRUB loader or something? Please help.

Thanks so much to anybody who has something to contribute!
