Does this sound like a failed Hard Drive?

The computer used to boot up and work, but after a few minutes it would crash and give the blue screen of death. I thought maybe the OS had become corrupted so I deleted the current partition and created a new one so that I could reinstall Windows. However it crashed several times during the OS setup and never finished installing.

I tried using a Linux Live CD (which loads entirely into ram) and it ran fine for hours, it never crashed. I finally tried installing Linux onto the harddrive but it failed as well, now the partition editor in Linux doesn’t even recognize the HD device.

Does this situation sound like a HD failure? A while back I thought it could possibly be the power-supply but now I’m leaning towards the HD. The computer is an EMachine Desktop, bought in 2005.

How much room for a partition with kUbuntu Linux 9.1?

I have an old HP Pavilion dv5000 with Windows XP Media Center ed, with an 80Gb Hard Drive. I would like to install kUbuntu on it. My questions:
-How much room would the Linux partition require, considering that I might add a few additional programs to standard kUbuntu?
-Does anyone know how kUbuntu handles the blue “fn” function keys from the Pavilion?
-Does S-Video out work properly with kUbuntu? I tried with the Live CD version and there was no way to put it to work.

Thanks all.

Hard disk partition mistake! :S?

The last two months or so I have been troubled with the fact that my D: drive was gone :O
I was stupid enouh not to google my harddisk, Fujitsu MHZ2320BH G2, 320 GB. For one and a half year, I thought it was two harddrives, but its just one partitioned :S

Now, when I look at the partitioner from the Linux Mint Live CD, there is 219 GB of free space or so :S

To get back my (D:) Drive, what do I do? (to be able to access it from My Computer)
create a partition that takes all the space?
should I do it with the live cd?
Will my stuff still be there, or will it be gone? (i believe I deleted the partition, so its kind or a rethorical question -___-)

Note: Im using Windows.
Wiesbock:
I dont think that would be possible, as Im a CCleaner guy, and wiped my free space plenty of times :P

What im really wondering about, is if I should use partition magic or the linux live cd or something else?
And to what type I should set the partition to? ext something, something else?
