Did I install DSL (Damn Small Linux) Correctly? =S?

I have always been a mac guy but lately have been messing around with the command line and also learning how to program in Ruby. Today, I decided to install Damn Small Linux on my old computer in the garage. So I popped in the live cd, tested it out, then decided to do a hard drive install. I restarted, typed “install” at the command prompt then a list of options popped up. I went into cfdisk and deleted the windows partition (so there was my entire harddisk space free–no other partitions.) Then I clicked Create and clicked Primary and it asked how much space I wanted to use–I put half the total amount. Then I clicked create again and this time I clicked (I think it was called secondary or something like that??) and made the space the rest of the space I had left…this is the part that confused me. I wasn’t sure if I should have just made one primary linux partition or the two. Then it asked me if I wanted to install a boot loader (I guessed and said yes.) Did I do it right?
Oh, and after creating the two partitions I wrote them both to the disk, then said yes to installing Grub boot loader. Do I need a boot loader if only running DSL and no other OS? I also created two users, 1 root and 2 dsl–and gave them different passwords. Lastly, if I want to save a file to the desktop, it says there is no “Desktop” directory, so where do I save it to? On my mac I save my program files in a folder titled, “programs” then open the terminal and type: cd Desktop/programs
then type: ruby filename.rb
and it runs. How do I do this on DSL or linux in general?

Thanks!!

which linux distribution?

well, i am a new guy to the penguin world. i want to start using a linux version because mainly, open source fascinates me..i’m just entering college now..i hav been using windows since my first grade…and a couple fo months ago, i bought a macbook pro 13..and from then on, i felt that unix(or linux) is the way to go..

this is my first shot at linux..and many have suggested that ubuntu is very good for beginners because of its huge community..i did a little research and i found out that even opensuse is also pretty good….

i have a 5 year old pc, which has 1 gig of memory with an integrated graphic memory of about 256 mb, and a pentium 4 2.26 ghz processor..

i wonder if ubuntu 10.4 can run with all the visual effects turned on..and how easy is opensuse…cuz i m willing to experiment…

and honestly i don’t want to run linux on my mac yet ;) ..its just that i want to experiment first on my old pc…

and do all linux versions have support for printers and scanners? cuz i have a hp psc-1410 all in one…and my dad uses this pc only for scanning and all that…he’ll kill me if he’s not able to scan :P ….

need some help guys, this is the first time i m gonna install linux…

and as far as live cd goes, i ve tried it out earlier, and for some reason, it just wouldn’t start…i ve already checked ubuntu when it was in its 6th version, and it worked ok..but then i was very young..

sorry for the long description, but then may be soon, i ll be helping out other guys ;)

any help would be appreciated :D

Need to install Windows XP. I don’t have an install CD, but I have a product key on the side of my machine?

I bought an old machine from a yard sale for $5. Unfortunately, the guy who I’d bought it from’s company had wiped the hard disk in some way and had left the physical hard drive clanging around in the case, unattached to anything.

So I re-attach the hard drive in the right places and screw it into the case. I got it booting into Win XP install mode, but it wanted me to insert an install CD. I didn’t have one at the time (and still don’t) so I installed Ubuntu from a Live CD.

However, my question doesn’t require knowledge of Linux or Ubuntu… I just want to know if I can somehow get a copy of Windows XP and install it into Virtualbox.

Think of it this way. I have a product key, but no CD. How can I obtain a copy of Windows XP Home Edition without having to buy another product key?

what is the easiest and fastest linux with ntfs support?

I need to know of a good version of linux, live cd, that has ntfs support and is fast and easy to use? please help a guy out =D

Can you install software while using a linux live disc?

I’m basically going to help a buddy install a keylogger into his fiance’s computer, because I caught her “doing something bad” with another guy in her car outside of a bar while he was out of town. He believes me but wants evidence so she’ll be the one stuck paying the deposits for all of their wedding plans when he cancels them.

Anyways, we obviously don’t want her to know that we know, just yet. So, to install the keylogger without knowing (or messing up) her Vista password, I was wondering if I could use a Linux live CD (so at this point, we’ll have access to her hard drive and system) AND download/install a keylogger.

The reason I ask is, 1. I’m not sure if you can install ANYTHING using a Live CD, and 2. I’m not sure if installing this program while using Linux would actually write to the correct directory and the registry itself (this program is made to boot with Windows).

Any technical input on this?
