Help with dual-booting vista and ubuntu!?

I am currently using a vaio vgn-fz140e which came with vista. I have a 60 gig external hard drive from my previous computer and I wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu linux on it. For some reason, the computer automatically tries to boot ubuntu but can’t load it from the external drive. It doesn’t even try to load vista. When running ubuntu from the live cd, I can see that both vista and ubuntu are installed on their respective drives, but they won’t boot at all. I tried to get into the BIOS, but for some reason, I can’t. Can anyone help me?

erase linux from external HDD?

I recently installed Linux Ubuntu on a external laptop hard drive to keep vista on my internal drive. Ubuntu worked fine but there was one problem, the external hard drive had to be present in order to boot windows using Grub. In order to save myself from a future frustration (external drive being damaged or missing).
But my problem is this: now every time that I connect my external HDD (with Ubuntu installed) it doesn’t even show up on “My computer”. So I want to format it to the way it was (clean)
If not through windows, Can someone tell me how to format it throu the Live CD?

I’m trying to install Linux?

I’m trying to install Linux Ubuntu on my computer (which is an Acer Aspire 5040) but everytime I try to set the boot priority when I start my computer up, it turns itself off and I have to plug my external hard drive in for it to boot Windows XP
Last time I tried it, it came up with a message saying “there is not enough virtual memory.” Or something like that and I’m not actually too sure what that means to be honest lol.
I’m trying to boot Linux from a live CD but.. Y’know, it’s not working.
Any suggestions?
xx
I have 512mb of RAM so I don’t think it’s that..
But thanks anyway

Installing an OS on an external hard drive?

I have multiple questions actually.

1) Is it possible to install linux (particularly ubuntu) on an external hard drive and boot from it.

2) Any recommended external hard drives to install linux on? I would prefer one with at least 500 GB but also portable.I was thinking this one:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate+-+FreeAgent+Go+640GB+External+USB+2.0+Portable+Hard+Drive+-+Tuxedo+Black/9420325.p?id=1218102198952&skuId=9420325&st=external%20harddrive&cp=1&lp=12

3) How would I install ubuntu on an external hard drive? My guess is insert the live cd (in my case a flashdrive) and choose to install on the external hard drive? But I haven’t installed ubuntu in a while so I don’t remember if it’s possible to select hard drives when installing.
