need some help?

ok heres what im doing. i’ve just downloaded linux and ran the live cd and im gonna stick with it. so i want to install it and i just bought a external harddrive (320 GB simpletech harddrive) because i dont want to partition my drive and i want to install it on the external harddrive, but i dont know if its bootable or not so everytime i boot my machine and the usb cable is plugged in it’ll boot up in ubuntu and vice versa. but if dosent work then i’ll just have to transfer my data to the external and partition my disk with majority of the space. i dont know if i eplained it well enough. i hope you get my point. thanks.

i have windows xp by the way.
ok i checked my bios, and i dont have the usb option, what do i do? should i backup my primary hdd to my external and partition my primary and install linux.

I’m trying to install Linux?

I’m trying to install Linux Ubuntu on my computer (which is an Acer Aspire 5040) but everytime I try to set the boot priority when I start my computer up, it turns itself off and I have to plug my external hard drive in for it to boot Windows XP
Last time I tried it, it came up with a message saying “there is not enough virtual memory.” Or something like that and I’m not actually too sure what that means to be honest lol.
I’m trying to boot Linux from a live CD but.. Y’know, it’s not working.
Any suggestions?
xx
I have 512mb of RAM so I don’t think it’s that..
But thanks anyway
