Perfect OS for a n00b.?

My mother is in the stone age. She needs a computer bad, as she uses snail-mail for everything.

I’m really not sure of her computing abilities, but I’m smart enough to know that someone giving another a computer becomes their tech support.

I’m giving her a PC, not Mac, that is…guessing since I didn’t open it yet, a 700, or 800 MHz machine with 256MB Ram, and a 10GB hard drive or so, if I can find it.

I’m thinking a Linux flavor like Knoppix, or Ubuntu. Something that is virus proof. Hackable…she has nothing valuable, and I may have it set as a live CD machine anyway.

Ideas, comments??

How do I get my wireless card working in Linux Mint 4.0?

I’m planning on switching from Ubuntu 7.04 to Linux Mint 4.0 and I’ve tried out the mint live cd and everything else is running fine. The restricted drivers manager has the atheros driver for my D-Link DWL-G510 rev. B card enabled just like in ubuntu but it says the device isn’t enabled, also in the network manager only the wired connection for my nic card appears. I need to be able to enable my wireless card before I install Mint.

How to backup files on a computer with a corrupted OS?

OK, so someone I know has a copy (literally, a copy) of windows XP and now it says that it’s not validated and wont boot into windows. Now, I’m going to install Linux on it (xubuntu) but I want to back everything up first. How can I do this? I’m messing with puppy linux on a live CD but would like to know if there is a better way.

Well, there is another computer that can be used and I will be using my iPod as an external hard drive to back up the files.
The computer wont do anything so… I need a live cd to do anythign with it

Linux Ubuntu no sound?

Just got Ubuntu 6.06 on Live CD and there is no sound. Everything else works fine,I get sound on my Windows. I tried installing libsdl1.2debian-alsa but apparently dependency is not satisfiable. Any help?!

best linux distrabution.?

I have a regular PC with 797MHz AMD Athlon XP processor and would like linux (because everything is better with the penguin) but I need to hear from the people who know.
1-I do not want live CDs/DVDs
2-I am willing to reformat the drive.
