i got vista capable pc. i want to intall linux os in there apart from vista. i hav adsl connection with us robotics router (model no: 9107) i got some exp with linux. but i want to know complete details of installing linux. can u tell me where i can download linux os and installation giude. i dont hav cd burner i and i dont want live cds. i like to compile linux kernal. if i do that how can i get other applications.
can u u tell me good linux distrubution for me and anwsers for above problems

I have an extremely old pentium 3 550mhz processor, with 384mbs of ram and a 20 gig hard drive. I dont know what the smallest linux that doesnt run off a live cd is. I have used slax portable linux but i want a permanently installed os (preferably with a kde interface and maybe looks like ubuntu) and I dont want to permanenly install slax becuase it still functions as a live cd, just running from the hard drive.
So the bottom line is, I need a list of small sized linux OS’s with links to a download. remember, I am choosing a best answer.

Ok i tried to run ubuntu linux and for some reason my system dont want to run it all I get is a bunch of tuff ont he bottom of a black screen. I tried to run pclinuz os live cd and when I hit the start using live cd it acted liek it would oad and then just came back to the screen. I also tried xubuntu and kubutu and the smae thing happeed like it did with ubuntu, So my question is which distro for linux should I try next Can anyone help me fine a linux that will run on this kinda computer. what could be the cause? what should i do? i dont want to lose all of my important data. i recently removed a partition that contained the linux installation but windows seemed to run perfectly fine after that. but now it just wont start up! i badly need your help! my pc is currently running on a live cd of a linux ubuntu.
