I want to try a Linux based OS on my machine as dual boot system w/ Windows Vista. Found lots of info in net, tried Ubuntu Live CD (without install), however cannot decide which OS will be the best for me. I’m not experienced w/ Linux and just want to try open source soft. I researched all of these distributions http://www.linux.com/distributions/ Is out there something else I don’t know about? Also the question is which distribution will work the best on my machine which is HP Pavillion dv9420us, see http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=computers&category=notebooks/dv9000z_series&subcat1=rts&catLevel=3&product_code=GA354UA%23ABA&tab=detailed_specs#defaultAnchor Thanks!
Can I try other OS without installing them (like Ubuntu)?

I’m a linux newbie and i can’t decide which of these distributions is best for me. I’m considering mint since it has flash video enabled on it by default but i’m also considering SUSE since i hear it’s easier to use and has more drivers readily available for usb devices.
consider:
I ran suse for a day with the live cd (the KDE) and i REALLY liked it. i just had trouble installing anything on it—the flash video plugin (like i said, i’m a newbie) so i went to mint (gnome) and though it doesn’t have much eye-candy, it has the flash plug ins and it has very convenient GUI tools for installing programs (such as the package manager and the software manager). however i ran into issues when trying to install some of my usb devices since i really don’t know my way around the linux terminal. which distribution do you guys recommend/prefer?

I wanna have Linux on my Apple iMac G3 700, and I dont want to delete my Mac OS X. I searched for may Linux distributions but still I dont have a solution. I downloaded Linux 8.04 .iso file and I burned it to a CD using Disk Utility (I know .iso files are burned differently). Thn I restarted my computer while holding C key. Black screen with text appeared and it said something like: Welcome to Linux… the default settings are:live… press tab key for options… press enter key if you dont know what to do because it is gonna start Linux(not really)… if you can not start type video=ofonly…
First I pressed just enter (which is the same as not pressing nothing , because if you wait the startup continues) and white screen appeared and than my computer shut down (i think it shut down, but the light of the power button was still on). Later I started my computer while holding the C key and than I typed video=ofonly but white screen appeared and then it gone blach with message Loading… and than disappeared (there was black screen with _ ,i was probably supposed to write something but I dont know what).
So please help me I wanna start my Ubuntu Live CD without installing nothing but that is what I get. If you know how to start the Live CD on PPC tell me but keep it simple
My iMac has 700Mhz G3 processor, 60 GB HD, 512MB RAM, Mac OSX 10.3.9… and it is supported by Ubuntu.
If you know other version of Linux that can be started without installing nothing or is easy to install, tell me. Thank you for reading

I asked a similar question last night but, someone that answered it suggested to re-ask it with more detail. I’ve been trying to install linux on my old PC. [has all requirements for the distributions i've tried, and it used to run Windows XP but, during a system recovery the whole operating system got wiped] The way through which i’ve been trying to install linux is with Live Cd’s, by placing them in the Cd drive of my old computer and letting the computer boot from that. My computer gets as far as the little screen that asks what you want to do [usually "boot cd" "save to harddisk" "check media" etc.] I choose the install to harddisk option and on all my attempts there is some type of error after this. First I tried Ubuntu which resulted in a squash fs error which would not let me do anything else, next I tried OpenSuse which resulted in many many many errors and it would have different errors everytime I would try to boot with it, although at one point i was able to put in the little command prompt looking thing a command I got from a linux forum that completely cleared my harddrive [still wouldn't let me install the OS but, this tells you guys that my hardrive is empty], last night I tried fedora which booted to a text based screen that also would have errors on it and it wouldn’t go passed the text screen [it also comes up with different things every time I try booting with it] So this leads me finally to my question, is this impossible to get working? Is it the fact that I’m trying to install with a Live CD? Should I try to install With Installation CD’s? If this is not a lost cause could someone please provide me with some instruction as to how exactly to get Linux [any distribution will do] on my old computer? [I only have blank CD's not blank dvds so the install media has to be either "Installation CD'S" or "Live Cd's" whatever will work. Any help, links, instructions, anything is greatly appreciated. [oh and yes I have tried burning multiple discs of [ubuntu anyway] and doing the little checksum things before install, and I know very little about linux so please speak as though I know nothing about what I’m doing (considering I pretty much dont)]
-Tried the alternate install cd it worked fine untill it got to asking how i want to partition i chose entire hard disk and then it asked where and I chose my harddrive and then it loaded to 100 percent and then stayed at a blue screen.
