Is my laptop Linux resistant?

I have a Toshiba A215-S7422 and I’m having trouble with linux. I tried to use BackTrack2 a few months ago. When I tried to boot from the live CD, i was able to log in, but when i used starx (i think thats what it was) i started to try to boot, and then it got stuck in a some sort of loop. Today Idecided to try to play aroung with Ubuntu, and when I select the start/install option, it just sits there. My guess is that it is stuck in a loop again, but since it doesnt show the progress like the BackTrack does, im not sure. The CD drive seems to be making the same noise over and over. For both of them I let them sit there for a long time (20 min) It isnt the CDs because they both worked in my desktop, and a friends Dell laptop. Any ideas?

I have windows xp preinstalled on my dell laptop in disc ‘c’,I have enough space on my disc ‘d’ and want to install linux there,so how can I do it? Do I need to partition? Is it automatically gonna be installed there (on disc ‘d’) when I boot with Ubuntu live cd? Am I going to lose my data and files on disc ‘c’ and ‘e’ if I install ubuntu this way?

Will installing linux on a brand new dell Laptop void the warranty?

I plan on purchasing a dell inspiron 1525 and want to put fedora 9 on it. I have a live cd for fedora. I want to know what the best way to remove the windows OS without removing any of the drivers I might need to run the laptop (ie. keyboard, disk drive and any other if they exist) and if by doing this I void the warranty. Im pretty sure that im not voiding the warranty because the warrentys general cover hardware issuese not software right? I don’t have this laptop in my possesion at this time.

Reinstall Windows on new Dell laptop harddrive.?

The hard drive in my Dell laptop just died and I bought and installed a new one. It’s completely fresh (i.e. no boot sector).

The problem is I *don’t* have a Windows CD. The dead disk had a recovery partition with a Windows installer, but obviously I can’t access that.

What options do I have? The laptop came with Windows so by rights I’ve paid for it. I have a product key, just no installation media.

At the moment I’m considering burning a live Linux CD just to get the hard drive set up, then finding a version of Windows somewhere. But I want to install it legitimately, because it’s something I’ve already paid for.
