Running Linux on my Laptop?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, running Windows XP, and I want to run Linux instead.
Can someone tell me if my laptop will accept it, and what distribution to put on my Live CD?

The Fn + F8 key is not working on Dell Inspiron Laptop, but works in Safe mode?

If I hit Fn + F8 key in “Safe Mode,” it seems like laptop is switching to external monitor and laptop screen goes blank, but my external monitor does not show anything. But I do get a message generated from external monitor says “input is not in correct resolution format” of something like that. Certainly, when I’m in regular Windows screen, the Fn + F8 key does not work at all. What seems to be wrong here? My laptop monitor also flickers and goes totally black in about 3 – 10 minutes in regular windows, but works fine in “Safe Mode” and in Linux Live CD.

Screen problem when trying to install linux?

I’m trying to install ubuntu on my dell inspiron 1501 laptop but when I just try to boot off of the live cd the screen is kind of split and everything looks screwy. What could possibly be the problem and what could be a possible solution?

Will installing linux on a brand new dell Laptop void the warranty?

I plan on purchasing a dell inspiron 1525 and want to put fedora 9 on it. I have a live cd for fedora. I want to know what the best way to remove the windows OS without removing any of the drivers I might need to run the laptop (ie. keyboard, disk drive and any other if they exist) and if by doing this I void the warranty. Im pretty sure that im not voiding the warranty because the warrentys general cover hardware issuese not software right? I don’t have this laptop in my possesion at this time.

Inspiron 6000 problem?

My wife’s Dell Inspiron 6000 has ceased to start, coming up with a blue screen and a message saying unmountable boot volume. I know the HDD is fine. It’s XP that has screwed itself up.

How do I get the data off it? I have tried various Linux live CDs but none seems to allow me to access the data on the HDD and transfer it to networked storage.

Also, how do I initialise the on disk reformat/reinstall partition? I know there’s one there as it shows up as a 35gb hard drive and it’s actually a 40gb.
It’s an elderly Dell. I found the drive (a hitachi travelstar) is dated 2005. I know my wife has had the laptop for a couple of years and that it’s out of warranty. I’ve fixed several blue-screen errors before but this time it’ll show the XP progress bar but then comes up with a blue screen with the unmountable boot volume error.
