My laptop won’t run the Ubuntu Linux 6.10 (Edgy Eft) live CD. Why won’t it work?

My Sony Vaio runs the CD well. So does my dad’s Dell Inspiron. However, my Toshiba Tecra won’t. Instead of going to the screen on boot-up, it continued to run the Windows XP boot up. The ISO was the official one, and I used the official ISO recorder. I made another CD, and its the same problem. My laptop has had issues with many computer games, specifically the classic NVIDEA display problem, but it seems that is unlikely. Maybe it could be caused from interferrence from an ISO mounter. Do I need to set my computer to read the CD before it boots?

Running Linux on my Laptop?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, running Windows XP, and I want to run Linux instead.
Can someone tell me if my laptop will accept it, and what distribution to put on my Live CD?

The Fn + F8 key is not working on Dell Inspiron Laptop, but works in Safe mode?

If I hit Fn + F8 key in “Safe Mode,” it seems like laptop is switching to external monitor and laptop screen goes blank, but my external monitor does not show anything. But I do get a message generated from external monitor says “input is not in correct resolution format” of something like that. Certainly, when I’m in regular Windows screen, the Fn + F8 key does not work at all. What seems to be wrong here? My laptop monitor also flickers and goes totally black in about 3 – 10 minutes in regular windows, but works fine in “Safe Mode” and in Linux Live CD.

Screen problem when trying to install linux?

I’m trying to install ubuntu on my dell inspiron 1501 laptop but when I just try to boot off of the live cd the screen is kind of split and everything looks screwy. What could possibly be the problem and what could be a possible solution?

Will installing linux on a brand new dell Laptop void the warranty?

I plan on purchasing a dell inspiron 1525 and want to put fedora 9 on it. I have a live cd for fedora. I want to know what the best way to remove the windows OS without removing any of the drivers I might need to run the laptop (ie. keyboard, disk drive and any other if they exist) and if by doing this I void the warranty. Im pretty sure that im not voiding the warranty because the warrentys general cover hardware issuese not software right? I don’t have this laptop in my possesion at this time.
