How do I clone a drive to a partition on a bigger drive?

I had an old 60 gig drive with c and d partitions. got a sweet deal on a new 250 gig drive, copied the d partition over and expanded the c to fill the 60 gig. Did all this with gparted, which is a linux-based live cd with the gparted program on it.

Now I’ve decided I want to run windows of the faster new drive, so I shrunk the existing partition on the new drive, and created a 70 gig partition at the beginning. used gparted to copy the entire c (60 gig) drive to this partition.

1 hour later… ok it copies, so I take out the 60 gig, set the jumper to master on the 250, fire it up and….

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
system32hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

grr. fine. plug in the old 60 gig again, go into windows. copy hal.dll over manually. No luck, same message.

google around the past few days and my brain is aching.

norton ghost seems like an option but costs money…

what’s the deal with linux? is there a catch?

my windows xp computer crashed, and my geeky neighbor suggested i try a “live CD”. anyway i put this thing in my computer, restarted it and opted to “try ubuntu without any changes to your computer” this is what i’m typing on right now.it’s so fast !.my queston is, is is there a catch? is it secure ? can i get a virus easer than windows? are they tracking me right now?why is something this awesome free? it sounds too good to be true.

windows xp installation disk can’t find hard drive?

okay, here’s the deal, my brother had several partitions on his hard drive:
C: win xp partition,
D: and E: data storage partitions
and an ubuntu linux partition with its swap partition

so, basically what he did was that he, using windows xp, deleted all the other partitions (D:, E:, the linux one and the swap partition), creating one big unpartitioned space, which he then formatted into ntfs.

now the idea was to format the C: drive and install a fresh copy of win xp, however, when he restarted the computer, and inserted the windows xp cd, the installation DID NOT FIND ANY HARD DRIVES ON THE COMPUTER… how is that possible??? the computer couldn’t load the existing win xp on the C: drive as well…

he later then tried formatting that big partition into fat32 filesystem via ubuntu live cd, but that didn’t help as well…

now we found some old 20gb hard drive, that we inserted in the pc, and we’re currently installing xp on that one, hoping that we’ll be able to fix the first hard drive

do you people have ANY IDEAS on how this problem might’ve occurred and do you have any possible ideas or solutions?
please, if you do, post it here, or drop me an email to ivan.lesh.85@gmail.com
i am also available on facebook. just search for ivan lesh from croatia
in addition: the new windows xp on the smaller hard drive (the 20gb one) doesn’t recognize the first, big, hard drive at all… is there a cure to that at all?

@ blackwhite – yeah, it could easily be that, but i don’t have an idea how to fix it… do you? is there some kind of an application that can find the missing disk?

@impauls – not cool dude.. what you think i am? a desperate housewife? maybe i should try plugging it in and out until it works, huh????

@mike – sounds like a good idea, but how can i install kill disk if i can’t even load the existing win xp on that disk, let alone find that hard drive from win xp installed on the other disk?

please, people, write me an email if you have any further ideas, i really have to find a way to fix this…

What is wrong with my computer?

So here is the deal with my custom built pc. The last thing I was doing on my pc before I started having this problem was burning videos onto DVD-Rs and surfing the net. The pc boots up the BIOS but every time right before Windows loads up it shuts down. I already replaced the ps and the same thing happens. I’ve disconnected all IDE drives and all cards while leaving just the primary hard drive and same thing. I tested each memory stick one by one and same thing. I even put in a new SATA with no windows on it just to see if it doesn’t shut down…same thing. There is no way I can run any diagnostic testing because the PC shuts down. I can’t even load Ubuntu/linux off a live CD because it will shut down. My mobo is Abit ip-95, nothing special but I don’t need much. Could it be a bad mobo? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
