Is it possible to install a linux iso to an external hdd without booting from a live cd?

I’m trying to install the Core Linux Distribution so I can try to build my own operating system just to see how it works, and when I tried to install a different iso, it didn’t give me the option to install it to the external hdd only the internal one — I’d rather not take apart my computer.

OH and I”m using the black macbook 2.4ghz any help is appreciated..thanks in advance :D

Install Fedora Linux?

I have an old PC that got eaten alive by viruses and EVERYTHING, except core system files are gone or corrupted by a virus and I dont feel like fixing it. I’m thinking about wiping my hard drive completely and setting up Fedora on it to use as a workstation. Will I be able to install from a Live-CD with no operating system already on it? How? it currently has WinXP Service pack 3.

Linux question on KDE vs Gnome?

Effectively i’m getting my new pc soon, (quad core yada yada yada) which is going to be running Vista 64 (which will be new for me)

I intend to use my old pc (AMD64 4000+ ) into a linux machine for use as a gaming server at lans, and as a workstation for coding etc.

I’ve decided after looking at numerous suggestoins from people i know, that i’m going with the openSUSE distro.

HOWEVER i want to get a feel for it before i install somewhat, so i wanted to try the live CD out on my laptop. Thanks to a virus i have, which has stoped me installing and un-installing anything on my windows platform i’m reformatting soon anyway, so i’ll be dual-booting linux and windows on the laptop.

Anyway.

I just wanted to ask for the live CD as a total windows person, should i download the KDE or Gnome version

On a similar note, does anyone know any useful software to download for the linux system. (compilers anti-virus / spy software, stuff like that)

Thanks in advance.

Trying yo install fedora core 9.?

I have a copy of fedora core 9 (copied from linux website). When I copy the op to a DVD rw cd it seems like everything works out alright. (All the files seem to transfer). What my main problem is that when I restart my computer, go to the boot menu (F12), and go to the DVD ROM option it says that no DVD ROM was found. I think that this is the right option because this is where I go to when I run a live cd version of linux.

Is the problem that I format the DVD with windows, that the dvd is RW, or am I just messing up along the way?

The best solution that ACTUALLY SOLVES MY PROBLEM will get the best answer rating.
