Why wont my note book recognize my HDD?

ok o i went to turn my computer on and i guess it said just stays in the boot screen of windows xp and i tried re installing my windows xp from a cd and now when the installation is in progress it says no hard drive detected but wen i ran a copy of linux it recognized it and i could take all my data out of it by running a live cd so Im stuck and i need help.

Hard drive recovery?

Just today a book fell on my laptop and now when i turn it on it tells me that the internal hard drive disk cannot be found. i contected dell and they referred me to a professional compay but they estimated about 500-1700 for recovery. i was wondering if anyone knew of a method that might work without sending it to the professionals? someone i know mentioned a linux live cd. what is that and what would that do? thanks

Linux Download?

I am trying to start using Linux as my main OS. I don’t know anything about it, but I have a book and I want to start trying it out. I want to download a Live CD version of it. I checked out the main site, but there are too many downloads to choose from. Which one is better/most popular?
