what is live cd?

do i need to create a partition to install ubuntu live cd to my pc?im very beginner in linux os.

I’m looking for beginner help on getting Linux started. Help very much appreciated..?

I’m currently running Vista, but I want to have both OS’s (Linux and Vista) on this computer. I would prefer to have something like choosing which OS to run on startup.
I’m a totally new to this, so please disregard any stupidity on my part. I’m decent at programming, so I’m not totally technologically retarded.
I know about the Live CDs but I would rather have the full system loaded on my computer.
Another very important thing I’m looking for is to be able to run both OS’s at their full potential (no performance hits when using one or the other)
I don’t know if this is possible, so go ahead and burst my bubble if it’s not. What do you think I’m looking for software-wise?
A point in the right direction would be awesome too.
Thanks for the help

Linux for an extreme beginner???

I am interested in learning the basics of linux. Im interested in setting up my own web server and mail server. However I have no idea where to start. Im really confused with all the types of installations. Where do you suggest I start? Live CD I guess is the best way. I have a box with nothing on it at home. But I also have a macbook here at school with me running parallels windows xp so i guess I could download a live cd and run it in the virtual machine windows for practice I wont have to worry about running my mac because it is running virtually right?

If someone could help me out and give me an idea of what route to go and where to find the basics of Linux that would be fantastic.

Thanks so much

Learn How to Install Ubuntu Linux in 5 Minutes

A Tutorial: Ubuntu Linux is a completely free open-source operating system that has many useful features and abilities, and this guide will show you how to try this new OS without harming your Windows system, and it only takes five minutes to learn! This guide will show you how to: -Download and burn the Ubuntu image to CD -Shrink the Windows installation to make room for Ubuntu -Boot to the Ubuntu live CD and begin the installation process -A step-by-step description of what options to choose and when during the installation, including how to manually partition Ubuntu on your hard drive This guide was created for Windows Vista (using the disk manager to shrink Windows and make room for Linux) but should work with Windows XP as well as any version where you can shrink the partition through the control panel. This guide was designed for systems with a single hard disk, but may be used on a multiple hard-disk system with minor changes.
