Windows Password Hashes and Live CD Linux?

If the registry is blocked through windows, but you can boot from a livecd, how might you go about recovering the hashes out of the sam file? Are there any tools for linux? Can I do it manually if I mount the Hard drive? I mannually pulled the sam file, but don’t know what else to do. On my windows I have created rainbow tables ready to crack the passwords.
I would prefer not to reset passwords. I want to know the importance of Bios and if A livecd could pull hashes on one computer, giving access to all the computers admin. user.

  2. All I can tell you is BIOS is only important for boot sequence. If there is a password on BIOS, you’ll never take command of a computer because it will always go to the boot. Live-CD, with Linux will never see C: drive. a VM-Win, with boot from CD-ROM would be my approach.
