Try pulling the drive and reinserting it when the laptop is off.

If you have an older XP Cd, it might not contain the HD Controller drivers needed for your notebook. You will have to visit the manufacturers homepage and look for a disk controller driver. Then, when you start the XP Installation, you will be asked to press “F6″ if you want to install additional drivers. When ask supply the driver (only floppy disks are supported) and it should work.

Try going into your computers bios disable the hard drive save changes and restart. Then enable the hard drive from the bios again. If the bios does not detect a hard drive then there is a problem with your hdd or a bad connection inside your computer.
