I am not sure what would cause that honestly.
Anytime I have run into an install error with a linux distribution, I would just make a new disk and ‘usually’ wouldn’t have any problems. But for some reason kubuntu always gives me issues.
Perhaps take a look and post this over at the ubuntu forums, see if it is a known issue and if there are any workarounds for it.

Try the bootsafe option. It should be in the options menu (F2 or F3) when you first boot the disc and it asks whether to boot first hdd or Xubuntu or install…

Sounds like a graphics card configuration issue.
If you press the F-keys at the boot menu, is there anything that gives you a different screen resolution?

I would try the cd in another computer to see if the screen goes black there also. If the screen does not go black I would try the cd again and not try to install linux but run linux from the cd.
Did you give it a few minutes after going black? It may just be loading some files.

Yes, computers tend to be flaky at times. The few years I spent in technical support made me very familiar with the flakiness hardware produces.
It could be an ACPI problem. I’ve run into that problem a few times, especially with older hardware. Linux starts to boot, then it goes black.
If it’s ACPI, then when the CD boots, add acpi=off to the boot line. Or alternatively, you can turn off acpi in your computer’s bios.
