It comes with a usb bootable download…meaning just copy it to the drive and your good to go (formatting drive is required) anyway the standard install is only 64mb and loads the entire OS into your ram so it arguably is faster than you standard os…Anyway their site also has posted dozens of (puplets) which are user submitted deviations on the basic install package…this means they have dozens of different software configs to add any functionality you desire…it’s also really easy to add programs and the drivers that are available with just 64mb is astounding…i’ve run the thing from my 8 gb flash as a portable computer for some time now…The thing basically work on any computer that can detect as usb storage device in bios… anyway hope this helps.

Puppy Linux can be used as mentioned above. Also take at look at Ubuntu 9.04 which also can be booted from a USB https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent Ubuntu benefits from the straightforward uncluttered and easy to navigate GNOME interface. You do not indicate how bad your Hard Drive but if your files are intact Ubuntu 9.04 will access them with ease.
