Hi, my computer has a probem where it wont get past the windows loading screen and it keeps restarting itself. Neither safe mode or going through repair mode with the windows cd works so far, so someone told me I should download a free “Linux Live Cd” so that I can boot off of it into my desktop so that I can save all of my family photos, important documents, and music onto a flash drive or a cd or something and then reinstall windows again. But, when I tried looking around I get to these company home pages where I have no clue what exactly it is that I’m downloading and none of which have the context “live cd” in them so I really want to make sure that it’s the right thing. Can anyone please direct me to the download page of what it is that I am looking for? Any help would be much appreciated as this is a very frustrating situation and I am on the verge of losing many important things that are dear to me, thanks alot!

live cd is burned onto a CD and your computer boots off that cd as if it is a harddrive. From there you can copy the files from the harddrive over to a temporary storage solution.

you’ll need to grab a 5 sum checker as well as an iso burner too theres a page on ubuntu.com on how to burn a live cd with iso s and a check sum.
You might want to grab a six pack and a buddy that might have some experience with this stuff

this guy put a pretty good tutorial page on how to download and burn a live linux cd. Here is the link.

This page is a few years old, but it’s still relevent and works. He uses a Linux distro called Knoppix, which isn’t designed to be installed on your computer at all, just to be run as a live cd. I would recommend using ubuntu instead, because you have the option of installing it to your hard drive if you want, and in my opinion, is a better OS than Windows, XP or Vista. The guy walks you through downloading the .iso file for knoppix, then guides you through the process of burning the .iso into a bootable cd. If you want to follow my suggestion, just go to http://www.ubuntu.com and get their .iso instead of knoppix. (knoppix is fine though if you have no intention of installing it.) Once you have it burnt on a cd, you can just boot off of it and into a linux enviroment.
