I use Debian GNU/Linux. It’s really nice, you should check out their website. I use it on a computer with similar specs to yours.

  2. My favorite and one that I use as a second OS is Linux Mint GNU/Linux, based on Ubuntu. It only requires 512 RAM and, at least about a 600MHz processor, which you have better than. You can look into it here: http://linuxmint.com/

  3. Wow.. ther are a lot of lightweight Linux distros out there.
Slax popcorn is great for older hardware.. but if you want that thing to party like it was still 1999 you will install Ubuntu server addition, JEOS (minimal install) and then hit the terminal with
    sudo apt-get install lxde

JEOS plus LXDE = all the power of a strong ubuntu server with a desktop that doesn’t tax your system.
LXDE is absolutely GREAT for older hardware.. Im surprised more distros aren’t using it.

  4. Compiz 0.8.2/Linux Mint 7

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 XFCE which is ideal for older hardware Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 XFCE then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 XFCE can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

  5. Debian and Arch Linux are two great GNU/Linux distributions that allow for customization for a older PC. I suggest you use openbox or xfce as your window manager and other light applications. Both Debian and Arch Linux are for more experienced users, so if you don’t have much experience in Linux I would suggest Ubuntu and openbox, xfce or fluxbox as your window manager.

    suggested software:
xfce or openbox, fbpanel, thunar, vlc, mplayer, feh, conky, midori, flock, kazehakase, leafpad, xpdf, xarchiver, epdfview, mirage, transmission

  6. A lightweight one, which does not use “heavy” software like the Gnome or KDE desktop environments.

Xubuntu Linux might be good (based on Ubuntu).

Slitaz might be good as well.

Absolute Linux maybe also (based on Slackware).
