My computer restarted the other night and afterwards I got a “DISK BOOT ERROR PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRES ENTER” message. I loaded up a linux live cd and I’m able to access the hard drive and salvage my data but I am not able to format the drive. When I attempt to format it doesn’t start, then gives me an error message.

You can try a repair from the Windows disk (assuming XP or later?)
Sounds like the hard drive may be physically/permanantly damaged. They are mechanical devices and die eventually.

Sounds like it’s just not able to do anymore writes. Could be a mechanical issue. Get your data off it (you did it the smart way) and use it for a doorstop.

try changing jumper @ hd from master to cable select or visa versa.

At first, you should get into the BIOS program (generally accessed by pressing F1 or Del key while the computer is just starting up). In most modern computers, you will see an entry for the hard disk if your hard disk is readable (should be because you can read it with Linux).
If there is a None entry there, please press enter or choose from the available selections to activate the hard disk and press F10 to save and restart.

What’s the error message??? It could be a faulty data cable.. Get a new cable and see if it solves the problem…. If the drive is a SATA drive, then change the port and see if the problem is ok…. If the problem is still there then you’re drive is probably faulty.

The hard drive is probably unable to do any more writes. Time to copy everything you need and get a new hard drive. The linux live cd should have a program called gparted. It will inspect the drive and format it, if it is possible to salvage.
