What is wrong with my computer?

So here is the deal with my custom built pc. The last thing I was doing on my pc before I started having this problem was burning videos onto DVD-Rs and surfing the net. The pc boots up the BIOS but every time right before Windows loads up it shuts down. I already replaced the ps and the same thing happens. I’ve disconnected all IDE drives and all cards while leaving just the primary hard drive and same thing. I tested each memory stick one by one and same thing. I even put in a new SATA with no windows on it just to see if it doesn’t shut down…same thing. There is no way I can run any diagnostic testing because the PC shuts down. I can’t even load Ubuntu/linux off a live CD because it will shut down. My mobo is Abit ip-95, nothing special but I don’t need much. Could it be a bad mobo? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

  1. You cpu might be over heating and it shuts itself down. I have had this happen to me before. Take the case cover off and see if all fans are on at boot.

As you probably know, it could be most anything….including (and most likely) the motherboard. As long as the PSU is OK and you’ve basically tested the other parts (memory, HDD’s, etc.) it almost has to be the mobo or something on the mobo….as toot said, maybe the cpu itself. Sorry I can’t help more.

Go to one of the computer tech support forums and ask this question. Go to CDFreaks.com then click on the forum tab (after you’ve registered…it’s free). They can help you….I will bet.

  3. As the others say it could be just about anything, but it is hardware related. Obviously some hardware component is not working correctly and shuts down before Windows can load in an attempt to reduce damages.

When you say you checked each memory module did you check to ensure that the modules are fully compatible with the motherboard? I made a mistake in the first system my husband and I built several years ago in buying and installing incompatible memory. The symptom was a reboot loop. When it arrived at the Welcome Screen it automatically shut down, then restarted, and when back at the Welcome Screen it started all over again. I could enter Safe Mode, and the BIOS, but not enter Windows in Normal Mode. This does not sound exactly like your symptoms but I type this to demonstrate how incompatible hardware components have a huge impact upon the entire system. Of course you knew that, but there you have it.

Your motherboard manufacturer should have a community forum dedicated to your motherboard. I have used Asus exclusively lately and have gotten to know the Asus community forums rather well, and the technical assistance system at Asus. Asus makes it very difficult to send in an actual request for assistance from Asus technicians, and I never get to talk on the phone with anyone, but work through email. Anyway, I recommend you first attempt your motherboard community forum as the people who help out there are most knowledgeable about that particular motherboard and so are best to receive help from.

If you motherboard is new and nothing you do fixes your issue request a return authorization or return it to the electronics store you purchased it at. If you bought from an Online store be prepared to have 15% deducted from the amount you paid if asking for a refund because these stores have this thing they call a “restocking fee”, which is why I seldom buy at these stores unless it is not too complicated and I know for a fact I will use it and I know it well.

Good luck and I hope you receive an answer quickly. I enjoyed my experiences building, even the errors because I learned a great deal more than if everything had gone smoothly. If you look at it as a learning experience it may be less irritating.
