What is the easiest, least risky way to be able to run multiple OS’s on one computer?

Right now, I have Windows XP, and I want to install Linux without getting rid of XP, so I can use both (not necessarily at the same time).
Ok, so how do I split my hard drive into two usable hard drives?

  1. TalentedChimp

Install Linux on another hard drive. Set the Linux drive as master and the Windows drive as slave. Do this because the Linux bootloader is better, i.e. Linux will play nice with Windows but Windows will not play nice with Linux.

  2. YOU COULD ALWAYS GET ANOTHER HARD DRIVE AND PLUG IN THE ONE YOU WANT TO USE. Or you could set up partitions on your hard drive and use a dual boot system !

  3. Go to:
    http://www.ubuntu.com

…and download the “live CD” image. Burn the image to a cd, boot to the CD and resize the drive using the built in “drive resizer”. Then continue with the install.

  4. Change your boot order in BIOS to boot from CD. Reboot your computer with your Linux disc and follow onscreen prompts. Linux will give you the option to format your entire drive or format a portion of free space on your existing hard drive. Linux will also install a bootloader such as LILO or GRUB which will give you the option to run XP or Linux when you start your computer. I sucessfully installed an ran Windows 2000 Pro and Linux Red Hat 9 with no problems on one 40GB Hard Drive. I recently purchased Fedora Core 6 and found it to be a bit more user friendly than Mandrake 7.1 and Red Hat 9.
