I’d check out debian or slackware. Either should run comfortably on the setup you have.

Hmm, I am a little surprised that TurboLinux did not install, but I do suggest you see some other answers here of those with the same minimal 128 MB of RAM, and I suggest you research and see if Debian or Mandrake might work well. Do NOT install what you do not need – if you will not be running a website from that PC, not using it to be an FTP server, etc, do not add those extra items; They each take space, and need tending, updates to keep the extra items secure through the passing of time.

Ubuntu should run on your hardware, I run ubuntu but I switched the window manager to flux. With Flux it’s much lighter. I see no reason why ubuntu or Xbuntu wouldn’t install on your hardware. Perhaps you have something in your box that is incompatible? Whatever you do I wouldn’t use an older version, you want your stuff to be up to date.

You have to find on the low allocation of the previous version installed, the machine can be sure. Linux is very easy to upgrade, you can download the source code.

I’d like to second the vote for Debian. If your needs are basic you might also like DSL, Damn Small Linux, it can run live or install and has a tiny footprint.
