   go download a copy xubuntu or xbuntu i cant remember which it is but its programmed to run on slower computers but still has a lot of functions and stuff

   Considering that you are new to linux, I would go with Ubuntu as I find it the easiest to use and it has some of the best support at http://ubuntuforums.org/ You can download Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

   If you want to use something which is faster, I would recommend puppy linux but I find it much harder to use. You can download puppy linux at http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html
